Coming out of Retirement!

It is not the braggadocious of not working or retiring at three years old or retiring twenty-eight times etc, - it is relating and sharing his excitement - good for him for feeling like a kid again!

Sounds great. Good luck. Had the NRA pistol instructor credentials for years some how just never got around to using them. Now 24 years into retirement.
Good move on your part, some extra income doing a job one actually enjoys doesn’t come around often.

Congratulations! That sounds like a dream job. Hopefully having some authority will make dealing with the public easy for you. Maybe your knowledge can be passed on to some of the new shooters.

i see all kinds of possible fringe benefits! Mining for lead, collecting range brass, more range time, possible discounts on guns or gear, ect ect.

Good luck on your new endeavor. Hope it works out for you. My guess is that being a RSO is a lot like being a youth sports official. Not for everybody. Looks like a nice place tho.

Hope it is what you still want to do after a few months. I retired last July. It lasted until March and the old shop made me an offer I could not refuse. Now I will be going to the LGS a lot more often! Guess I am a sucker for more cash.;)

Congrats. I'm still a few years from retirement, and look forward to doing something fun part time. Definitely want to get back into hunter safety instructing, and have also thought working the counter or range at a gun shop could be enjoyable. Looks like you found a good spot.

Oh Boy. First day of actual work in 5 years and my ol body is screamin. Been a long time since I've had to spend this much time on my feet. I don't think I'll have trouble going to sleep tonight.

The job is quite different. The people I work with and for are great. Patron so far have all been friendly.

So you're a certified gun nut like all the rest of us and you'll be working in an atmosphere that in many respects is an gun nuts type of candy/ice-cream store.
Color me green with envy! More seriously it looks like a well organized and respected and classy operation with varied activities for shooters of all skill levels.

I'm quite happy for you! Enjoy!

Hi...
I have been retired almost two years now.
I thought about returning to work one time for about 1/10 of a second....then good sense got the better of me.

Ain't gonna happen...the days in the work force are in the rear view mirror where they belong.

I spent today running the Labrador Retrievers, going out to lunch(had to eat in the car thanks to the current lockdown) and then spent about three hours on the tractor cutting the lawn here at The Estate.
No way to fit some foolishness like a job into that kind of a schedule, so I ain't even gonna try.

Congratulations on the new job!!!

I hope you like teaching! I enjoy watching range officers helping new shooters and some old ones become safer and better shooters. Have fun and be safe!

Congratulations and yes, retirement jobs in a store with stuff you really like is great fun..Don't know your social security status but be careful with how much 'officially' make as it can impact your SS income..

Once again thank you all for the kind works and light razzing.

Second day, on the same range with a different co-worker with a more formal instruction. Was a good day, range was moderately busy and I more comfortable tonight. Not sure which range I will be on tomorrow. They have separate 25yd, 50yd, 100yd, 300yd, trap, 5 stand and Sporting Clays. These past two day they have had me on the 100 yd range.

Tired, back is sore and my feet ache... Perks so far are 20% discount on purchases on cloths, accs., ammo. Firearm purchases are 10% over cost, Free FFL transfers, free range use and mining privileges.

Spend money on a good pair of shoes, your back will thank you.
Good to hear that you are enjoying the new job.
I retire in 15 weeks and already have two gun shops trying to hire me.

That's awesome to hear AND that is my go to range! I'm about 30 minutes from there and even if I have 4 other ranges to go to that are closer that one is the best. It has a nice laid back atmosphere but still safety oriented. Maybe I'll see ya around when I get some free time.

Last report for the week. I'm now off until Thurs, then nest week will be Thurs - Sat as he will be short handed next Sat.

Yesterday I spent the day on the 25yd range which is the pistol and sight in range. We were packed the entire day and even after sleeping 9hrs I'm still stiff and sore but at least my feet aren't hurting.

Also yesterday I got to spend the day with a guy that was a 20 year USAF Range instructor that is 78 years old. He is only working one day per week. I will say it took awhile to get him to open up and chat a little bit. At first he seemed reserved and kind of resentful that he had to work with the "New Guy". So of course sensing this I kept my distance and by the end of the day he was becoming more friendly.

My impression of the first few days is that they have a pretty reasonable clientele and they are mostly well behaved. Yesterday there were only a couple real instances of foolishness or not following the rules and directions. At no time did I feel unsafe.

Also got to see a wide array of different forearms in the past three days. From a couple flint locks to a 1930's Japanese Arisaka Mum that was in near perfect condition to another 1930 British 303 to the new AR/AK rifles and pistols. Yesterday there was a small group that had 2 AR 5.56 pistols and holey wow did they have a report to them.

Congratulations on your new job, sounds like you will enjoy it.
I retired over 5yrs ago and haven't missed working at all, I miss my friends that also work there but not the hassles. When I retired I took my alarm clock out and shot it with the 50bmg, it took 6 tries to dial in a 100yrd shot instead of 1000yrds but I won't hear that thing anymore. My job now is making coffee and making sure my dog knows she is queen of the house, usually in the summer I keep the grandkids or they keep me:)

Glad to hear that the new job is going well for you. Nice that they give you some "perks" for working there(I got an apron.. o_O)
As one who has also recently "un-retired" ,and is walking on concrete, I feel your pain on the being on the feet for a long time. I also recommend good shoes and insoles.

Thanks and believe me folks I am not doing this out of need other than maybe a need for some sanity. After 5 years I've gotten bored and lonely sitting all day by myself as the dog doesn't carry a very good conversation. Many of my old friends and acquaintances have moved on so I don't see them any more. Then it's not that I don't like all you hanging out here but one can only do so much on the forums. In just 3 days I have already met 4 new people that I would like to get to know better and maybe spend some time with.

Yes work is work but there is also enjoyable work and the dreaded work. This so far is enjoyable, just as years ago when I was working part time at a local Golf Course. Not because I needed the money but because it got me outside doing something I enjoyed and something I could be proud of when the golfers would approach me to tell me how great the course was looking. Because I knew I had a part in that. Plus the one year my lil brother and I saved over $4k in range fees over that summer and we sure at a great time together!

I was forced to retire in 08 due to injury. I enjoyed getting paid to do nothing for exactly 6 months.
Didn't need the money but was bored. So I got a part time job in 09 at The local gun store. I had been a customer for years and the boss dId not hesitate as soon as I asked him.
He also is an internet seller, and though the money was low I took it. 11 years later still doing 5 hours a day - 25 hrs a week and loving it.
Hey I bet at 71 I'm the lowest paid executive in the industry and I don't care. I get to go to shot show every year, he pays everything - room at the Bellagio all meals and gives us $100 to gamble.
I need a day off I take it.
Wife loves me not hanging around the house and since the money isn't budget money, we eat out a lot or buy guns at a discount. Some weeks I OWE him money.:cuss::evil::neener:

I plan to retire in 3 years.

First order of business is to get the hell out of California. The only reason I came back here was due to family and it doesn’t hurt that I am padding my retirement nicely.

I told my wife that I plan to get a part time job at an LGS once retired.
She said “I hope you’re not planning that to boost our retirement money...because I know darn well no money will be coming home, just guns and doodads in exchange for hours worked is what I see happening.”

I said “Yeah, ain’t it great?” :D
She smiled, rolled her eyes and walked away.

Yep, I take that as a full endorsement of my plan.
