I have an old 70 series commander lw and love the old thing...
and am considering a new one of it's kind..there are 4 I see of interest to me...
1) springfield US model champion..plain jane...no divot at ejection port, no ambi...
2) springfield champion lw loaded...nice looking pistol.
3) colt commend XSE lw...nice looking pistol.
4. Kimber pro carry II...noce looking pistol (no ambi looks like)
I guess I am splitting hairs, but anybody out theree shot all of these and
have a preference among them? Frankly, although a little pricey I tend to the Colt...just because it's a Colt and my old commander has earned its stripes, but am willing to learn. thanks.

Of the four, I'd take the Colt, though personally, I'd rather just get a plain jane 1991 NRM Commander. I've personally found Colt's basic gun to be consistently better than their specialized models.

My preference would be for the Springfield LW loaded. I am partial to S/A 1911's mainly because they are the closest to the original 1911 design (no series 80, no schwartz safety system). The ILS is easily disabled or removed and they seem to be the best value for the money.

I would also consider the SW 1911Sc. This is a Commander size 1911 with a Scandium frame. About the same weight as an alloy frame, but the addition of the Scandium makes it a little tougher. SW's 1911s have gotten good reviews since they were introduced and their firing pin safety is the best of the ones out there IMO.

Aside from each of these, I would still look at the S/A Champion GI. This is the best value of the bunch, but you would need to factor any mods you would want into the total cost. IIRC, Springfield has also introduced an alloy-framed version of the Champion GI that is only about $30 more than the steel framed version.

I had a Pro Carry II for awhile but sold it. It was the only commander sized pistol I have owned though.

It is a little different than your colt and the S+W's in that is has a bull barrel and no barrel bushing. It has a little different disassembly routine because of this. Mine was a very accurate pistol for me, but I had little to compare it to. I could shoot better groups with it than my G21.

Never had a Series II related issue or any kind problem with it. I liked it because (other than the bull barrel) it was a pretty plain jane looking 1911. No forward serations, no ambi not much writing anyhere on it.

The super fat, sticky rubber grips on it don't belong on a carry gun though. Slim grips were a huge improvement.
