So I've made a few posts recently regarding this pair of 1911's I've recently acquired. First I got a sweet deal on a Springfield Stainless Champion with factory night sights. It was a couple years old, but was in good condition and the night sights still had plenty of brightness left in them.

Then I got it to the range and it had a horrible issue with vertical stringing. At 10yrds my groups were 5" tall, but ~1-2" wide. I called Springfield and explained the issue and that I was not the original owner, but was willing to pay to get it shooting. They sent me a prepaid label and told me not to worry about it. Took them three weeks and they replaced the barrel, recoil assembly and even threw new night sights on it.

While I was waiting, I came across another good deal. This time on a Colt Wiley Clap Lightweight Commander. I was already sold on the handling characteristics of the commander and wanted a lightweight for carry, and the stainless for practice, IDPA and to go on the nightstand.

Well, I've been waiting to get some more range time before posting my thoughts and they've both been running like tops. I don't feel like I'm losing anything over my 5" 1911's, the compacts never felt good to me. These are the Goldilock "just right" size for me.

The Springfield seems to be a perfect 6 O'clock hold at 10yrds. I'm real happy with how Springfield took care of me. This things shooting great now.

The Colt shoots directly to the sights, but I hold 6 O'clock so we end up with groups a little low like this. The trigger on this Colt is phenomenal! That's a seven round group!

I'm really happy with both of these. I'm going to look into replacing the front brass bead sight on the Colt with a tritium to get it to shoot exactly where I'd like. I'd like to get the front strap checkered on the Springer, and get both bobtailed. Maybe a few other little touches.

Long story short, both these guys are keepers!

Bannockburn, you have excellent taste in pistols I've noticed.

While I'm a sucker for nickel, I really like that 38 Super. What kinda velocities do you see from the 4.25" barrel?

Why thank you sir! Couldn't tell you about the velocity; don't have a chronograph to measure it with. Had a Government in .38 Super but never really cared for the additional weight out front. I also like to run a lot of 9mm. ammo through my .38 Super as it's less expensive to practice with and pretty much shoots to same point of aim as the .38 Super ammo.

My Springfield Operator 4 in barrel is a spot on shooter as well. Only pistol I ever bought used either.

To run 9mm in a 38 Super is simply a barrel, recoil spring and magazine swap correct? I've always liked the idea of a 38 Super for 357esque power levels, and like the idea of 9mm for plinking.
Heck, I could throw a 22TCM barrel in it too and have a real multipurpose pistol!

Those are beautiful Commanders!
I just added a RIA .22TCM/9mm and it's a great shooter in both calibers. I had not thought about adding a .38super barrel! Hmmmm...
The mags for the combo are .38super (made by Mec-Gar).

I think the Commander size is a good compromise, not quite as shoot able as a Government, not as finicky as an Officer's.
I gave up looking for a Commander alloy Colt when I procured this:

It needs a blue steel Colt companion.......................I'm pretty sure.

As soon as I came back from Nam in 1971, I bought a Combat Commander. I carried it all over Big Sur and the Sierras, carried it plain clothes for a few year in Reserves and until recently it was my go to gun. The Colt Commanders are now my son's go to CCW in Oregon.I kept the Gunsite S&W 1911 Scandium Commander and the Para P13. The Factory satin nickle Commander has King Hard ball sights and nothing else. The Other one which was extensively carried has Colt ambi safety and rear and tritium front and other mods that were done little by little over 40 years.Has a fitted Barsto barrel after 6000+ rounds thru the stock barrel

A fine brace of Commanders you've got there! I especially like the satin nickel one!

I like your choice. My 9mm Kimber Tactical Pro is a special favorite of mine.

That's great to hear about the Springfield experience. Sounds like they really took good care of you. Congrats on a great little commander!

Yep, pretty much so. I have a complete 9mm. barrel assembly from Storm Lake and it's a perfect drop-in fit for my .38 Super Commander. I use the same recoil spring from the .38 Super with the 9mm. and it runs fine that way. Mags are Colt and again work great in the gun.

They really did take good care of me. They didn't hassle me at all about not being the original owner. Turn around time was quick too. It's definitely a shooter now.

I have an original 70 Series CLW Commander, a Springfield Champion and Charles Daly and much prefer the Colt or CD. For some reason the Champion just eats me up with hammer bite. It is the only 1911 style pistol that does that to me for some reason.

That's odd. Does your champion have a large beavertail like mine? Anything other than the traditional GI grip safety has always worked fine for me. Kimber, Wilson Combat, Springer, Colt, Rock Island, S&W even Taurus's beavertail have never given me trouble.

I like the small ring hammer on the Colt to be the most aesthetically pleasing personally, it's slightly smaller than most as well. I think it would be the least likely to bite you while the Springer does seem to be a little longer front to back than most hammers which could contribute.

OP (gotboostvr) -- I think you scored on that Champ. I foolishly traded off a sweet Loaded Stainless Champ and miss it greatly. It was accurate, reliable and in my opinion, a great-looking pistol with those clean lines and nice finish.

As for the LW WC, I've been looking for a good deal locally on one for a while. Love the concept; in the meantime, I'm "stuck" with my Colt Lightweight Commander XSE ... looks just like bannockburn's, only in .45 (and it's got the "100 years of service" rollmark).

Actually, I settled for the Wiley Clapp! I wanted a XSE LWC. Bud's had them for about $850 a year and a half ago and I'm kicking myself for not picking one up then. I'm perfectly happy with my Colt though, it's not the exact model I wanted but it's got almost the same spec sheet as the XSE's

Me too only mine is a Colt Government. I picked it up mainly for that rollmark. I think it's a great inscription to have on a 1911.

My EDC is a S&W 1911 PD. Commander sized Scandium frame. I also have a Colt XSE LW Commander that will be coming into the line up after one more range trip. Then I have a Dan Wesson CBOB in 10mm. That one will come into the carry rotation some day.
