Compact .45 Auto - What do you carry and why?

I used to carry a Tanfoglio full size - sold as an EAA Witness Carry Comp. Nice gun. When out of ammo, you can throw it as an effective weapon. HEAVY, it is. My alternate was a Beretta 92-FS. Nice - almost as heavy, but - it's a 9mm.

I was looking for something inexpensive and smaller. Happened to find a Bersa Thunder 45 Ultra Compact Pro at a local gun shop. It felt good, has a lifetime warantee (with almost local support) - so I got it. Hoping it'd be a good range gun.

This thing is more accurate, lighter and yes, more reliable than my EAA. I love it!! It is now my Daily Carry. (7+1 capacity - reliably feeds every JHP, FMJ, SWC, LRN I've fed it.)

Glock 36

Pros:
Light
Most accurate auto I've ever fired
Tenifer/polymer (resists wear and sweat)
Conceals well (AIWB under a t-shirt)
.45 ACP!

Cons:
6rd magazine capacity is less than most autos.
Would conceal even better if the slide wasn't shaped like a box.
Questionable track record. I love mine but I am reluctant to recommend it because I've read about so many others who have had trouble with theirs.

1st generation Kimber Ultra CDP that came with the hyper-meltdown treatment, checkered front strap, ambi safety, nightsights, etc.

A really accurate and ultra reliable aluminum-framed 3" .45ACP at about 25 oz. unloaded. Then again, WHO carries a .45 unloaded!

This one ain't no safe queen, and always goes bang . . . just like they all are supposed to.

Crimson Trace equipped Kimber Ultra Tactical or Covert.

Why?
Because they are reliable, accurate and reasonably small and light weight.

Although I like the G30 (I am a 9+ Glock fan), consider the newer Taurus PT145 Mil Pro (does not have the word Pro next to MILLENNIUM). It has SA/DA trigger with good ergonomics and external safety. The more I shoot it, the more I like it. If you can shoot one, you will be pleasantly surprised.

It is 10 round double stack and the length is actually shorter than my Glock 27 with better grip angle (similar to 1911/Sig).

It uses the same Fobus holster as Springfield XD45. It has been reliable with every factory/reloads I have shot, including the 200 LSWC.

I have several Compact 1911's that I carry. Which just depens on the circumstances. In the summer the easiest .45 for me to carry around generally is my Springfield Ultra Compact (loaded). It has a 3.5 inch barrel, nightsights, and a bunch of goodies. The internals are all Wilson Combat. I bacically carry it in the summer because it is small and flat. It disappears under a t-shirt. When I go camping or hiking I take my G30. It is my "hard use" gun. If it falls in the mud, water, or I hit a tree with it no big deal. Just shake it off, clean it up and it's good to go. You can't hardly hurt it. It is very accurate and totally reliable. Plus 10+1 rounds of Winchester 230gr. +p
ammo and board and 13 rounds on G21 back up mag is very comforting.
Also carry my USP 45C quite a bit. It's blocky like the Glock but fits my hand better. Stone cold reliable and also superbly accurate.
I can give the thumbs up to any of these guns. They all work, are accurate, and relaible. You have to figure out what works best for you. Their is no one perfect gun for everyone. You just have to find the one that fits your hand and budget best.

Another vote for the Bersa UC45. Mine is in the discontinued stainless and is an awesome carry piece.

Colt Gunsite CCO

Colt Gunsite CCO ....

Series 70

Perfect balance between size and handling

100% reliable, even during break-in

Simple to detail strip / complete critical parts access

Absolute best ergo's of any 1911-type pistol I have ever felt.

Was harder to find and expensive to acquire, but surely
one of the best kept "secrets" in this category.

Glock 36. Accurate (for me), nice slim grip, light, and 6+1 is a compromise I can live with. Or I can choose to carry a couple more mags.

Has eaten all the different ball ammo I have tried and all the JHPs.

Heard a lot about how it can be tricky so I blew a stack of cash testing the JHPs. Oops. The Corbon DPX's certainly don't come cheap.

Personally I like my Glock 27. Easy to conceal, always goes bang. POA is easy to get back quickly. Even at 30 yards you can fill a 6" circle with bullet holes. A little practice with your partner goes a long way. Trust your partner.
