Anyone here have a Compact ACOG system mounted on their rifle?

I was checking out the offerings on Trijicon's Website and was impressed... not only by the prices. $950 - wow!

I'd love to hear real-world feedback on these devices.

What brand do you like? Which magnification do you prefer? Which reticle design and color?

Thanks,

I bought one in 1999 and I couldn't keep the thing zeroed. I believe it was a mount issue. Their prices have gone up substantially since then. Personally, I thin they are way overpriced. Just my opinion.

Sven, I like the compacts OK; but went with the full size myself. You should be able to find one for considerably less than $950. I see them in the $550-650 range brand new and less than that for used or large discount places.

I've got a TA47-2 on one of my ARs. I really like it. It picks up (for me) much quicker than a red dot. I've a couple of red dots on some other uppers. The owner of the shop I help out at has a Reflex on his AR and it's not quite as quick for me. While mine is a carry handle mount I'd have preferred a Picatinney <sp> mounted unit but beggars can't be choosers. Luckily for me I didn't have to buy mine. Merchandise is the way I'm compensated for helping out there. I've been thinking of getting an adaptor so that I can use it on a spare forward mount. I have a forward mount setup on one of my other uppers with a red dot and really like that setup.

I have a red dot on a flat top AR and thinking of adding a compact ACOG yo my A2 rifle. Has anyone compared speed of acquisition between Aimpoint or EOTech red dot and the 1.5x or 2x compact ACOG? At $670, I'd rather not buy sight unseen and haven't found nay locally...

Forward mounting would reduce parallax BUT wouldn't it exceed the eye relief of the scope? Also, the field of view would be much reduced... (Maybe I need another flat top upper to do with it...but would a fixed front sight interfere?)

The people who have them say neither parallex or front sights are issues.
As soon as I can find one at a reasonable price, I'll let you know for sure.

I'd like to pick one up if I can get one for $550-650. Where can I find one for that price?

Try http://www.sableco.net. They have a special on the TA44 now at $575. My understanding is that they aren't authorized Trijicon dealers though - they buy from large distributors and sell at prices below what Trijicon dealers can sell at. Also check out http://www.swfa.com.

These guys ARE authorized Trijicon dealers but have higher prices than the two listed above... http://mstn.biz/

I haven't been able to compare the compact ACOGs and the two sights you mentioned above directly; but I have the TA11 3.5x ACOG and have been able to compare it directly. For me the Aimpoints and EOtechs are still faster - it is a difference measured in tenths of a second and getting smaller; but the ACOG is a hair slower.

The magnification hasn't really been a problem; but you have to learn to compensate for the dot shift as your view changes from the red dot superimposed over the weak eye view to the dominant eye view. Scoring targets IDPA wise, the ACOG provides me better scores as it is almost as fast and helps me to be more accurate.

You shouldn't have any parallax problems as long as you are viewing the scope within the proper eye relief. The M16 base compacts are designed to sit in the carry handle from the start. I expect you are right regarding the problem with eye relief and forward mounting, although I have found Trijicon's eye relief figures to be on the conservative side and the smaller magnification scopes show 3.6" or so of eye relief.

I've only had the chance to play with the compacts once or twice so my opinions on them should be taken with a grain of salt. I have more time with the TA31 and I own a TA11.

If you can wait until after the Iraq war (starts &) ends, the prices will go down as Trijicon is currently busy fulfilling Govt. contracts.

Probably will be a lot of surplus and refurbished ones on the markets after Iraq goes down as well.
