Yesterday I ventured over to the rifle range to shoot the SBR and make sure it's little red dot was still sighted in.

I thought, "What the hey?!" and decided to load up the CCO and give it a try.

hmmmmmmmm..........

I don't have pics, but even with my old eyes through trifocals, I was able to put most of 'em COM.

Who'da thunk it?

Now, I know 50 yd shooting with a full size 1911 is a common thing among bullseye shooters, but I'd never shot a pistol at that range before. It's FUN!

In fact, it was so much fun I hope to go back today or tomorrow with some darker targets (the big, off-white, IDPA outline paper are hard to see) and shoot with some match ammo (AND a spotting scope).

Great hobby, ain't it

I haven't tried the P-01 at 50, but I did use the Phantom at 50 yards, and also kept them on a human shaped target. Not close to a compact pistol even though I do carry it concealed.

I did the same thing years ago at a range. Having targets on the 50 and messing about in a range box I came across a loaded mag for my .45 AMT Backup. It had projectiles which I was told wouldn't feed and I had lost track of the mag intending to unload it - instead, I got the Backup and fired them all off flawlessly and going down to the target. I figured it had to be a fluke but three more mags later it was confirmed that the little pistol was accurate way outa line with expectations given the AMT's reputation and the dimensions of the pistol. I would never have thought it was at at all even responsible to try to hit anything at 50 yards let alone the respectable groups this one was getting.

You might be surprised how someone with a high power rifle - standing on his own 2 legs can miss a clay pigeon on the backstop at 50 yds. With a snub nosed revolver you can throw up dirt just about as close as the guy with a scoped rifle !!!! Many rifle shooters do go shooting off a bench, not so much on their own feet.

You can get sudden respect by a shoot off of rifle VS pistol - if both are standing. Just don't pick on the people that shoot rifle competation.

I hunted with a SBH .357, everything from snowshoe hare to deer, for over 30 years. My favorite targets were the end of a 3-lb coffee can one handed at 50 yards. Sent many a hotshot police officer to the showers with that gun...

I never tried my Glock 27 at 50.

I have hit 5/5 with my 1911, 3/5 with my Glock 36.

Can't hit with my LCR out to 50.

Um, there are some who have pinged plates with a standard .38 at 200 yards, it's a matter of understanding the ballistics (how high you need to hold) etc. of the gun and practice. it's more than doable, and was a pretty common feat. I know that in S&T many suggest that you practice your accuracy with your CCW out to at least 50-100M just so you KNOW you can hit with that pistol.

Not to be the contrarian but under what circumstances would I ever take a shot at a human sized target standing dead still at 50 yards using a compact pistol? Or is this just a "gee I wonder if I could..." question?

Contrarian!!:neener:

A fair question.

I'm new to competitive shooting, new to 1911's, and new to pistol upgrades and improvements.

So, I'm choosing to push my boundaries or what I think is possible.

It's turning out to be a confidence builder and a skill booster. (It actually improves my close range shooting.)

Most importantly, it's just a whole lotta FUN.:)

It's happened. Rare, yes, but not unheard of.

And , it's not only fun and challenging, it's enlightening.

Tell someone you can hit a hubcap at 100 yds with a handgun and they'll not believe you....until you hand them the gun and have them give it a try for themselves.

I've hit an IPSC. target, on purpose, at 50 yds with a Beretta .25, but no one believes it.

When I was a cop, I qualified on the 50 yd course with a Model 38, shooting all double action, including weak side shots. Had the high score of the day, outshooting everyone else on the range that day, who were all shooting full size guns. Unbeknownst to me until recently, my snubby score still stands today, some 20 yrs later.

I was just telling someone on here that I hit a sandal stuck in the snow at 50 yards with my glock 26. I know that I could confidently hit center mass on a human torso at 50 yards. Don't let these little guns fool you. They are very accurate. It takes a little practice and good trigger control.

Went back today with better targets and shot the LC9, too.

25 knot crosswind

50 yds

LC9 (It really ain't that hard once you get it on the paper.)

The Colt CCO at 50 yds (I think my trigger finger is pushing a lot of shots low/left.)

50 yds from the firing line

The Dinan took its place amidst the trucks

Shooting IDPA targets at 50-yards with my Glock 26 is one of my favorite things. Right up there with shooting at the 100-yd plate with my 4" .357 Magnum.

One time, years ago, our range had a 100-yd plate that was about 30" across. I watched a couple of guys sighting in the hunting rifles, then hit the plate 3 out of 4 shots and high five each other. I unloaded 10 rounds from a Glock 17, offhand, and heard 8 "PINGS". They packed up and left.

(It's also entertaining to hit the 200-yd plate offhand with my .30-30 carbine. Because everybody knows the .30-30 is a short range gun... ;) )

I encourage more shooters to at least try it.

It sure helps for "calling shots".

At 50 yds one pretty well knows whether or not it's a good shot as soon as the trigger breaks.

Besides COM at 7 yards gets boring.

This above all else. I kinda have the mentality that shooting for me is a great hobby that just happens to be great for self defense, too.
The only time I focus exclusively on self defense techniques is during self defense training. at other times Ifocus on habing funn and seeing what I can do with this amazing boomstick lego thing I drool over and sink money into.

Bob Munden hit a target with the first shot at 65 yards with a Bond Arms .45 LC derringer.

Gotta admit though, it may not have been the first camera take. I wasnt there but I want to trust him.

Love to see that....especially if you're shooting that well. I've always like the Dinan kitted cars. When I stopped pounding nails and moved into the office, I traded my GMC Sierra in on an older Lexus LS400....fewer points at deer camp, more MPG and a heck of a lot faster:evil:

Love shooting the pistols at longer ranges, but it is something that I need to do more of. It presents a new challenge, especially when the rifles get boring and we're limited on space.

I kept a magazine of 9mmm from my Glock 26 on an 8.5"x11" piece of paper at 50 yards when I tried during IDPA practice one day. As long as you concentrate on trigger control, its not too hard to hit 50 yard targets.

I have passed the NRA Law Enforcement Instructor patrol rifle COF with a handgun. Of course that isn't saying much.
