Hey Folks,
I picked up a Hornady Hand Primer and was hoping the Lee shell holders will be compatible.
It comes with a separate tray for RCBS shell holders.
Anyone know if the Lee shell holders will work with either of the trays?
Thx.
I was also concerned about the seating depth even if the Lee shell holder does fit with the RCBS tray.
I thought the RCBS shell holders are thicker and the seating would be too deep if I used the Lee holder?
Is the depth with the hand primer tool determined by the amount of pressure used or does the tool control the depth?
All press shell holders are the same "thickness".
They have to be to work correctly with any brand of dies.
It is an industry standard now days.
I don't know how seating depth is controlled on the hornady, but I'm sure they thought that out if it also uses RCBS shell holders with the correct adaptor.
The depth of the primer should be controlled by the amount of pressure and "feel". Simply put: "Apply pressure to the handle until you feel the primer reach the bottom of the pocket."
Properly seated primers are inserted into the primer pocket until they bottom out in the pocket using whatever pressure is needed to accomplish this. What depth they happen to be from the bottom of the case is irrelevant as long as theiy are not higher than the base, the anvil is in contact with the bottom of the pocket and enough excess pressure was applied to give it a proper "set".
