Gettysburg
Tears of the Sun
Patton

I also like a lot of the other movies mentioned.

Here'a few to add to the list if they're not already there:

The Civil War: A film by Ken Burns
Patton
Blackhawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
Schlinder's List
Kelly's Heroes
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Killing Fields
Paths of Glory
The African Queen

Not all of them are war movies in the traditional sense but, instead, have war as a backdrop. But damn they're good.

All Quiet on the Western Front
We Were Soldiers

The Manchurian Candidate
Three Days of the Condor
Telefon

Red Dawn
Soldier

(Hey, you didn't say which war :D )

here's Two I thought would be at the top of the list :

Where Eagles Dare. - Clint Eastwood plays a Ranger w/ a suitcase full of dynamite and Richard Burton the English Military intel man who invade a German held castle. Very twisty spy story amid all the ****e blowing up.

The Cross of Iron - James Coburn as a very professional non political german NCO vs. the Russians , and his own officers.

Movies Man

I'll try not to include movies already suggested.

I was very suprised to NOT see

The Great Escape (cmon steve freaking mcqueen with a motorcycle?)
Seven Samurai (not quite a war but maybe close enough?) wait for the rain...
Lawrence of Arabia
Spartacus
Gladiator :what: (warlike?) "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

and last but not least, right next to Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers as my Favorite WW2 Movie and it's a lot older!

Night of the Fox:
a made for TV movie about a sort of spy in Jersey during WWII. Long but very good.

Glory
Zulu (scrupulously accurate)
Master and Commander
The Crossing (Made for tv; one clunky line by Washington)
Lost Patrol (lots of '17 Enfields!)
All Quiet on the Western Front (the original 1930's version)
There's a good one about Attila the Hun that's run on the History Channel sometimes.

Meg Ryan in Courage Under Fire.
In essence she plays three roles as the story unfolds. She is marvelous in each.

Also an early Australian film: Attack Force Z

When you guys are referring to "The Lost Patrol" do you guys mean "The Lost Battalion"? That is the only one I think that A&E made; good movie. Also there is two versions of Sahara, the one with Belushi was the first one I watched but I must say I liked the 1943 Humphrey Bogart version more.

The Battle of Algiers - Good movie for a oldie.

The Best Years of our Lives - A view of WWII vets after the war. No action but good acting.

Empire of The Sun - a bit hard to sit through at times but the scene with "P-51 CADILLAC OF THE SKY!! HORSE POWER!!" and the look on Christian Bales face at the end when reunite were worth it.

Heartbreak Ridge - might not belong here for some but I loved seeing Clint as a marine.

A Midnight Clear - when the patrol comes across a German and allied soldier frozen in a standing fighting position was a good scene.

Taegukgi (The Brotherhood of War) was a recent Korean movie on the Korean war that I thought was pretty good. Fake at times and the ending was ehhh on realism but there is a lot less movies about the Korean war to pick from.

Also anybody seen the 2005 Yamato? Having a hard time finding this one in stores.

Gardens of Stone, Hamburger Hill, The Big Red One, Kelley's Heros, Catch 22, M.A.S.H., Patton, Enemy At the Gates.........
Wind Talkers was O'k but really missed in a lot of respects IMHO.

Saving Private Ryan
Black Hawk Down
Der Untergang
Stalingrad
Patton
Full Metal Jacket
Kingdom of Heaven (the crusades count, right?)

First off, if you haven't seen "The Great Raid", you should. It is very well done, and very interesting.

Secondly, I also vote for Sands of Iwo Jima.

Thirdly, I knew that jackass that was portrayed in Jarhead. I really, really can't express my true feelings about that book or that movie without using a lot of words that start with F, but suffice it to say that I am not a fan. That movie is packed with lies, from beginning to end. Rockstar.esq went to see it with me in the theatre, and he will tell you that I was purple with rage by the time we left. "Swoff" is nothing more than a low-life, barracks lawyer who was and is bitter because things got hard. If he put half the energy into being a Marine that he did into whining, he would have been a pretty good Marine. I really, really, really don't like that guy.
