AR15 Upper question

This comes with Wilson Arms 16" 1x9 twist chrome moly barrel, A2 upper, bolt and carrier assembly, charging handle, CAR handguards.

There asking $395.00 before tax and shipping. I've done some research and this seems to be about the best price available. Even if you ordered seperate parts and put everything together yourself it would work out to be about the same (you might save 20 bucks). IIRC a baseline A2 upper is usually about $450.00 complete. Is this price too good to be true? Maybe a mis-print?? If not I want one! Let me know what you think. It's possible I'm looking in the wrong places for my upper.

Thanks,
-Dev

Try these guys out.

They are a little bit higher but you get the RRA warranty on the upper. Email them and see if they can work with you on the price. Even at the quoted price it might be worth the extra $25 just to get the factory backing.

P. S. Not sure if you knew but chrome moly is not the same as chrome lined

I bought 2 complete used AR uppers on the ar15.com Equipment Exchange for about $320 each and both were better configured than what you're showing. What you show wouldn't be a bad upper and Del-Ton is a good place, but you can do better for $400 with some looking.

The barrel on that one is plain steel and probably 4140. The better barrels will be either chrome-lined or stainless steel and will likely have a lighter weight profile than the heavy barrel profile typical on lower cost barrels. Don't get a heavy barrel unless you understand the difference and have a use for the extra weight.

One test of the value of that upper is what you could sell it for with only a few rounds through it. My educated guess is that you'd maybe get $325-330 for it in pristine barely-used condition. Just buy one barely used and spend the extra money on practice ammo.

Thats about exactly how much I have to spend. I can't seem to find any uppers that include a bolt and carrier for under 400. The lowest I came up with is an upper without bolt and carrier for 270. That would still be around 370. I could really use some help lol.

Thanks

for what it's worth, i'm getting ready to buy an upper and i am getting it from Del-ton. i personally am building an A1 close clone and with the C7 style upper, and a 1in9 chrome lined barrel it's going to come in at $460+shipping. next cheapest price i have found was $419 for an Olympic "plinker Plus 20" that last i checked does not have the chromed barrel (the diff in price is fully accounted for by the chromed bore on the Del-ton), and i trust Del-ton more than i do Oly.

to put it in perspecitve, i did a little figuring and found that in MY case i can get an upper that i trust more, with a chromed barrel upgrade for less than $25 more all up price (price plus shipping for the Del-ton, Price+tax for the Oly since it would be from a local dealer)

if you want to bargain hunt for your upper you can but for a NIB upper you probably won't do much better than Del-ton

Both of those I bought included the bolt/carrier/charging-handle. In my case, I swapped parts to obtain the desired configuration then resold what was left over.

Start watching the EE on ar15.com daily and you'll quickly learn what is available and how much things are worth in the used market there (lots of traffic on that site). If something is still for sale after 24 hours, it's probably high (or at least not a bargain). If it sells in less than 1-2 hours and several people post 2nd, 3rd, and 4th dibs then it was a deal and priced low. This applies to common items that many are looking to buy (upper parts especially). There is some risk/reward with buying used so check feedbacks and insist on pictures of the actual product before even thinking about committing to buy something.

For $20 more get the RRA from Eagle.

Delton has good stuff, but for the price difference I would get the RRA. Just dont buy from Model1.

I contacted Del-ton and they said there uppers parts are made by CMT(they make RRA uppers and lowers) and the lowers smaller parts are DPMS. Pretty good stuff for the price.
