I'm in NC
I've heard and read many inferences that it's not legal to carry concealed in a hospital but I cannot find anything official. I've reviewed the NCDOJ brief and googled a bit - I'm concerned and I want to stay out of trouble. Do any of you know if hospitals are specifically off limits or is it just when they are affiliated with a school?

Thanks,

CHH

Some hospitals have schools/college's in them so I was never so sure on this topic. My ccw instructor stated that the local hospital (North East Medical Center...or w/e its name is now) was a no go cause it had the Cabarrus College of Health and Human Services in it. My instructor also said some very questionable things about places that were prohibited, so idk.

This is frustrating - Once again the only way to be 100% sure I'm not violating some obscure condition of the law is to go unarmed. "Shall not be infringed" indeed.

1) Educational property. – Any school building or bus, school campus, grounds, recreational area, athletic field, or other property owned, used, or operated by any board of education or school board of trustees, or directors for the administration of any school.

So how do we interpret that? Hospitals included?

I would interpret it: unless specifically signed, the hospitals OK.

Most hospitals are NOT operated by school boards, not even teaching schoolsare operated by a school board, they are run by a hospital board, that is people who are elected/chosen to represent the HOSPITALS interest, the school part of it would fall undertheir authority.

That being said, here in Nebraska, every medical building I have been in, has a NO CCW sign.

I am also from NC while not all hospitals are teaching hospitals I have yet to find one that does not post no firearms allowed. So it is a good practice to not carry INSIDE the building. It is there right, anyone can post no firearms allowed on there property.

7. any premises, except state owned rest areas or stops along the highways, where

conspicuous notice, or statement by the person in legal possession or control
of the premises.

But things are going to improve.Slowly some OL areas are being eliminated.

See this article for new NC gun laws beginning December 1 signed into law by Governor Perdue.

I'm really looking forward to the State park carry. I've never liked hiking and only having a machete to defend myself against a bear.

I don't know why the quote didn't stick: but "(1) Educational property. – Any school building or bus, school campus, grounds, recreational area, athletic field, or other property owned, used, or operated by any board of education or school board of trustees, or directors for the administration of any school. "

That has to br referencing K-12 schools, not colleges and universities, just by the way it is written. Colleges have a "board of Regants" K-12 has a board of education.

Several of the hospitals in Kansas City are in very bad neighborhoods with high violent crime rates. I was visiting a family member a couple of years ago and there was a shoot out accross the street from the hospital while I was there. The walk from your car and back is dangerous. And not something you want to do unarmed imo. For me, I just just make sure I'm not "printing".

I live in NC and most of the local hospitals I frequent are posted so it is a moot point for me.

As others pointed out, if it is a funded part of UNC...it is off limits as it is now technically a school or school property. It is really hard to tell with some hospitals.

NC's carry laws stink. I basically look for a "UNC" affiliation on the signage, and if I don't see it...I treat it like any other building. Then I'm usually met with the "no concealed weapons sign" and I am forced to disarm, anyway.

As most states prohibit carry in schools or institutes of higher learning, and as MOST hospitals are affiliated with medical schools. I would think that the common sense answer here would be... No...

Or as I used to drill into my rookies heads... When in doubt.... DON'T...

Every hospital I've visited in recent years had a no guns sign. Security is a big problem in emergency rooms because many of the people admitted are under the influence or have been involved in altercations. People have been known to barge into the emergency room to continue the fight.

In WA we have at least once large health conglomerate with the below sign which makes it sound like it is enforcing a state law, which it is not. Funny enough they have had robberies at the pharmacy yet there are no armed guards or security cameras that I've seen. Talk about a victim disarmament zone!
