'Concealed Carry' Group Wins Tentative Backing at Pa. Community College

The student government at Community College of Allegheny County granted tentative approval Tuesday to create a student group that endorses the rights of gun owners, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported -- an effort that had previously been thwarted. Christa Brashier said last spring that officials at the Pittsburgh-area institution had discouraged her from creating a campus chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus and from distributing fliers aimed at recruiting students to join such a group. She solicited support from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and the college altered its policies requiring prior review of promotional fliers. College officials maintained that they did not oppose the creation of the group, and have worked with Brashier to craft an application that would meet the criteria for the creation of student groups. The proposed group supports changes in campus policies and local and state laws that ban weapons on campuses, but does not advocate violations of existing policies or laws, like the policy banning guns at the Community College of Allegheny County.
