I am curious, of the people who conceal carry, who has been "made" and what your experience was. Did you change anything after?

The Las Vegas Costco shooting last July 2010 got me thinking about how wrong this went and how fast things escalated. Below is a link to the Las Vegas Sun newspaper article.

Another link to a thread on officer.com discusses the incident.

If I have no one ever said anything,My gal on the other hand has been.
1St time was at the doctors office. She forgot to remove her PM9 and a nurse spoted it and called it in.Her Doctor walked in to see her with a grin on his face asked her how she was doing and did his exam.
Afterwards he said Connie I better walk you out theres 4 officers waiting for you in the parking lot my nurse got a little nervous when she saw your pistol.
He Knows she has a permit as does he.She was pretty nervous when they
surrounded her. They gave her a bit of a lecture and let her go.
Lesson learned,it could have been much worse but her doctor is a level headed guy.
And when one of the officers handed her back her permit and licence he told her happy birthday.

iblong,
thanks for the reply. What did the cops say to her? Seems like the nurse over reacted not even mentioning seeing the gun to the doctor.

It's things like this that are good to know considering the popularity of CCW.

as far as getting caught concealing, I have one bad experience at a friend's home that made me buy a more secure holster.. Mixed company, my gun fell onto the couch next to an anti, he made a scene of course

They were a little nervous when they approched her comming from several directions( they didnt know if she's a nut or what)she was pretty scared her self. They asked her about reading the sign posted on the Door told her they
dont want to do this again.Unlike some counties in this state our police are
pretty pro carry. But it doesnt hurt that shes 5'2'' a buck ten and cute.
I may not of faired as well, just saying.

I was CCW a 1911 OWB under a jacket. While leaving the grocery store I was approaching a mother and her young daughter. Yep: strong gust of wind and the Wilson Combat was for all to see.

The mother's expression said it all. She looked shocked and / or scared. My response was to smile and say "isn't it a beautiful day today?" This seemed to calm her immediately, as if she realized I was one of the "good guys" OR maybe she thought my job required the carrying of a firearm.

Either way she smiled back and said "it sure is...and I here it's going to be like this all week." I replied "that's great news! Have a fantastic day!"

I believe that my response to her initial reaction was the factor into making the incident a non-incident. If I freaked out trying to cover the 1911 I bet her anxiety would have increased. However, by acting like it was no big deal she mirrored my actions.

Then again maybe she had a thing for Wilson Combat or 1911s in general :)

a man acting erratically in the store, damaging merchandise and carrying a pistol in his waistband. An officer approached the man, identified as Scott, then noticed the pistol and gave him verbal commands to lay on the ground, police said.

After Scott pointed the pistol at an officer...

Don't do that.

...at a friend's home ...my gun fell onto the couch...

Don't do that either.

I apologize if this offends anyone, but dang...

Les

I have carried in my right front pocket for 26 years and never had anyone call me on it. It is something that anyone that does carry would know what it was but guess the general public does not??

iblong, so the Doctor who CCWs carries in the office despite the door notice or not?
Glad your girlfriend was handled courteously.

I was made while hiking once. It was me & two lady friends on that trip, and it rained much of the time. It came time to set up camp... we decided on hanging out in their tent for a little while before cooking dinner, and as I was contorting myself to take off the wet raingear inside the confines of the tent, my revolver flopped out of its pocket holster & onto the floor.

The reaction was delayed, probably because I nonchalantly put it back and didn't miss a beat in the conversation. I figured, so what? They're liberal, but we'd been friends for over a decade, and they knew I grew up in Alaska and liked shooting. Then one of them asked, "was that a gun?" I got the impression they hadn't believed their eyes; looking back on it, an armed good guy probably didn't belong in their view of reality.

In the end, it made them afraid. They actually said it might go off by itself and kill someone. It didn't matter when I replied I'd never had an negligent discharge in my life, and that I had no intention of shooting unless someone's life was in danger.

It's been about 4 years since that incident. Neither of those friends went hiking with me again, and a while later they quietly stopped returning calls or emails. Years of friendship might have ended just because of fear, or maybe the friendships fizzled out by themselves. I don't know.

Never been "made," but everyone who knows me knows that I carry. People just don't seem to have a problem with it. Granted, I don't know too many left-wing lawyer types...I'm just not pushy about telling every one they need to carry or join the NRA either. I just tell them that I have made a lifestyle choice to be prepared, and this is just one of the ways to do so. In OH, OC is legal so I just trust my cover garment and quality IWB holster.

I carry openly and/or indifferently concealed at least half, more probably two thirds of the time. It's extremely rare for anyone to notice. The few times anyone has noticed, I've carried the Second Amendment message.

That said™, reactions might be somewhat different in New York or Chicago; then again, I don't hang out in slums.

I'd like to think I've never been made, but the probability of that is pretty low, to be honest as I do carry OWB.

Around here this is a pretty anti-town and well, I've still never had problems. As a matter of fact because how I do handle the topic I've been approached after a rifle was raffled off, by some "antis" asking if it was me who got it. When I said I had sadly not, they actually said that that was a shame. They'd feel more comfortable with me having it than anyone else.

I also regularly partake in the open holster week on campus and nobody has ever given me anymore than a wary look, which stops the moment they actually stop focusing on the holster.

I guess "Don't be a <deleted>" applies here? People have no reason to fear me, thus they don't?

Just yesterday as a matter of fact, went to drop off car to get exhaust fixed and i had just been out checking my traps that morning so i still had my cover-all's on with my PD weapon of choice (Sp101 .357 mag) tuck into chest-pocket, when i dropped keys unto counter after a friendly good-morning to the receptionist, i saw her eye's dart to my left arm-pit area and then back at me ,then back at my arm (getting wider every second) as-a matter of factly i stated i have a permit to carry this and i didnt notice any signs on your entry that guns were-not allowed, are they ? she pauses for a moment and says "no i was just watching the news about arizona and it kinda caught me off-guard" i said yes it's too bad that people dont always get the mental-health help they need, and then added "i wish somebody in that crowd could have reacted faster with equal force" he wouldnt have gotten even 1/2 that clip emptied,,, she became quiet and looked directly at me and said yea, i suppose your right,,, i think i may have changed somebodies view on gun control yesterday,,, at least i can think i did

I carry everyday and most of the people who work for me know. Some of them carry as well. Several of my subcontractors carry as well. Open carry is legal in Ohio so if I was made I could really care less. If someone saw me and was startled I would tell them I have a permit....Russ

If I have, it has never been brought to my attention. Where I live, we have a lot of LEOs from surrounding jurisdictions, as well as our own, living. Being a former LEO myself, and still looking like one (short cropped hair, clean-shaven, etc.), I'd probably just be dismissed as one by someone who "made me."

I've never been made, that I know of, and I carry a full size 1911 IWB all year. Some people I'm sure see, or have the idea that you are carrying, but say nothing. Most are sheep.

Here in NM is legal to open.

One fine Summer day I could not conceal in a sandwitch shop ... so I tucked my tshirt in and let the gun butt hang in the air.

The owner could not take the eyes off it, but said nothing.

I dress, act, and look like a reasonable guy.

It's surprising to hear some of the reactions from people in different parts of the country. I see people open carrying around here all the time, nobody cares. It is rural Tennessee though. Opening day of deer season around here is like a religious holiday, and camo is a perfectly acceptable method of dress year round.

To answer the OPs question, as far as I know I've only been "made" once. It was also in a doctors office. The outcome was far different from the previous story however, not a word was said. Nurse didn't even pause. Like I said, nobody cares...

Maybe.
I carry a small Diamondback 380 and usually it is in a RKBA pocket holster.
However when I wear tight jeans or my work slacks I carry it in a Bulldog cell phone style holster.
One day I went into Gander Mountain and while looking at several handguns in the display case one of the employees was walking by and did a sharp double take at my Bulldog holster.
Since they sell Taurus pistols including the TCP 738 which comes with one of these holsters I am pretty sure the guy knew what was up.

Nosy person: Hey, whatcha got in yer pocket there?
Me: Oh, that's just my PDD.
NAP: Don'tcha mean PDA?
Me: No, PDD. Personal defense device.
