I am thinking about buying a P3At Kel-Tec for carry and I have a question. The belt clip seems like a great way to carry the gun but I'm nervous about the trigger being bumped and the pistol going off in my pants. Does anyone carry their ccw condition three (chamber empty)? Opinions either way would be appreciated.

Tell us just how the long heavy terrible trigger of the pistol in question can be accidently pulled while it is in "your pants".

Actually, a couple of the gun magazines had articles in the past regarding this issue and most advocate a pocket holster. In one instance, the author had a p-32 go off and leave a hole in his pants. I agree that the chances are extremely remote but the consequences are pretty severe. Question remains the same, does anyone have thoughts about carrying a pistol in condition three?

I'd feel uncomfortable with condition three carry. If I'm going to need the pistol, I'm going to need the pistol now, not one or two seconds later after I chamber a round. Condition three carry also assumes that you'll have the luxury of two free hands at the time you'd need the pistol.

Since I also want to carry safely, I wouldn't carry a pistol that doesn't have a manual safety without a holster to cover up the trigger. This means I'd search for a holster or go to pocket/fanny pack carry.

one more thing to consider, carrying w/ an empty chamber means 1 less round in capacity as well, important to consider with a P32

Let's see...someone's rushing me at close range and/or drawing a gun, the adrenaline kicks in, perhaps my hands are sweaty and slick...am I SURE I'll be able to properly hand-cycle the gun?

Worse yet, what if my weak hand's disabled or otherwise occupied?

A few weeks ago, I was loading up to leave the house, and right as I pulled the slide back, both my dogs heard something outside and just bellowed at the top of their lungs. I was so spooked that my left hand slipped on the slide, and I narrowly missed getting my finger caught when it slammed forward. And that was just dogs barking :(

The Keltec is NOT a partially cocked striker system like a Kahr/Glock/insert safe DAO gun here.
The KT has a hammer thats cocked and released by pulling the trigger and isnt short and light.........
So I dont get how anyone could have blown a hole through his parts...unless he had A VERY BAD DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My wifes EDC is a P3AT.....I know how hard they are to shoot.....I just dont see a reason for Cond 3.................
Get a good pocket holster that covers the trigger and carry the thing.........
Shoot well..

According to his post he intends to carry the pistol using the KelTec belt clip

To me this means that it will be stuck in his waist band using the clip.

I really can't see how the trigger could be accidently pulled while he is wearing the gun.

Great Scot:

There are some model pistols that should be carried with the chamber empty, and many situations were a fast first-shot isn't an issue. But most of our members are focused on CCW and nothing else. I believe that the United States is probably the only country where Condition One is common, and Condition Three isn't the usual way to go.

The real answer is to use whatever method you are confortable with, depending on the circumstances. What others choose to do is a moot point.

I guess that would make Condition Five "Gun field-stripped. Slide, frame, mag, and ammo all carried in different pockets".

No that's what the California CCW law would be by the time it gets pushed through.

Its been bashed to death, BUT IMHO, If you are comfortable condition 3, and practice drawing , racking and getting on target that way DO IT.

A lot of keyboard commandos will bash you for carrying nothing less than a cocked and locked RPG.

Jamie C And All Others,

My comment was not made as a derogatory one towards those of us that are in the line of fire.

Please dont take it as such.

dhoomonyou, my comment wasn't intended to be derogatory either. It was meant to point out that most of the people that advocate Condition 3 haven't tried it while being shot at.

Tempus fugit. Time is fleeting.
Never is this more true than when your life is on the line.
So don't waste it (time) doing things that should have long since been done beforehand.

Anyone suggesting condition 3 on a P3AT needs to try one first. Those little buggers are HARD to rack with that heavy spring!
These guns beg for a pocket holster. Putting them on a belt clip (Kel-Tec accessory) also works -- as the reason for a pocket holster (not needed with a belt clip) is to keep stuff in your pocket from getting pressed against the trigger. Pocket holsters are cheap, generally aren't visible, and keep the gun properly oriented for the draw.

My P3AT has been reliable through several hundred rounds, surprisingly accurate, but sometimes unpleasant to shoot, if shooting a bunch of rounds. My trigger finger and the trigger guard, during recoil, don't get along.

I'd love one with a slightly larger trigger guard.

In my opinion condition 3 would be too slow for a Kel-Tec. I use the belt clip with my P32 for carry almost daily. I have never worried about an accidental discharge either. Trigger pull on the Kel-Tecs I have shot feels like it is around 9lbs and it is very long. If someone has enough forceful movement in their pants to discharge a Kel-Tec they have bigger issues to address.

"It's the gerbils, Man! They keep settin' off my pistol!!!" :what:

Anyway....enough foolishness.... 10-4 on the "no condition 3 with a P3At Kel-Tec". It's just not needed.

Carry one in chamber Thats what it designed for. My self I would be more concerned if it will work. Post the other day about guy been carrying his went to range and wouldn't fire.

Everyone, thanks for the information. Sounds like the best option is to buy the gun and practice with it until I'm comfortable carrying it with a round in the chamber.
