Hi,

I bought a bolt set for a Wingmaster and I'm curious about the black piece (bolt stop?) that sits in the chromed bolt.

When I flip the bolt over, this piece just falls straight out. I can take it out easily with nothing holding it down. Is this normal? Should there be a screw or something that holds it in place when it sits in the bolt?

Just for safety reason when I shoot the gun.

P.S. I have an 870 Express, and this doesn't happen...

That's the metal piece with the spring that passes through the chromed bolt in the middle right? Yes it is then. The bolt stop just sits on it I guess.

I just talked to the guy and he said that new style 870 bolts have a retaining pin whereas mine (from a wingmaster) doesn't. Does that matter?

The locking block is retained by the firing pin and spring, and a small roll pin on the side.

Here's an exploded view of the 870.

Look at the bolt, and notice part number 67. That's the roll pin.
With the firing pin and spring in place, the block is prevented from coming out the bottom.
The roll pin prevents it from coming out the top.
If the roll pin is missing, replace it.

So I take it that my 870 bolt is an older one from a wingmaster because it doesn't have the locking block retainer hole. It's still safe to fire in my 3" express right?

I think yours is a new one. I think they have figured out how to save some more money. Note, that schematic, while it is a very good one, is not the same as the one on the Remington site for parts.

Is it safe to use them if they don't have a locking block pin. It seems like this is an older design since my 870 express bolt has one. Should I get one?
