I have a Remington 700 SPS chambered in .300 WSM that has had some work done to it (muzzle brake, floated barrel, bedded action, trigger job); I mainly thought of this as a 200 - 300 yard gun for my purposes (target, longer distance shots on game, varmint/pest control {deer rifle target practice});

I have asked several persons their opinion about what magnification power for a scope for this rifle; my hunting buddies were leaning me toward something like a 6 to 32 x Nightforce scope, but already went toward a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5 - 14 x scope & got some of the work done on the rifle for free;

is the 4.5 - 14 magnification range something you would consider appropriate for such a rifle for stated purposes? thanks

for 200-300 yards its probably on the high side, i would lean more to 3-9x, although the gun you describe sounds like a lot more than a 200-300 yard rifle JMHO im sure others will have differing opinions

I've had no trouble holding one MOA at 500 yards with 10X, and I really think that I could easily have done as well with 9X. (Simmons 44Mag on an '06.)

On any rifle I'd use for hunting, I don't like the loss in field of view for scopes with a low end greater than 3X. So, really, 3x9 or 3x10 is my preference in a variable.

I'm with the others on using a 3x-9x power scope. My 300 WSM has the same power scope, and I have taken shots at crows about 600 yds away. Didn't have any problem seeing them in the scope, but it takes a few shots to figure out elevation.

you're fine. i like the 4.5-14x scope and think it is the most versatile, all around scope. my own 300 wsm wears one... as do probably 8 or 10 other rifles...
