I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical .223 that is in need of a new scope.

My requirements are as follows:
1)I would like it to be a variable power with the highest power being 12x or higher.
2)I would prefer a Mil-Dot reticle (or a Multi-X)
3)I need the scope to be around $300 or less

What would you put on this rifle with these points in mind

I have been eyeing the Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40, but have not read enough on them yet.

I tend to agree with the Nikon as you have indicated, given the price restraints. If you opened the price to $450.00 to $500.00, I would suggest a Leupold 4.5-14. The Nikons that I have looked at had really nice glass. I have no idea how they track, meaning true, not experiencing either run-out or adjustment lag. Folks seldom experience these problems with Leupolds. The Nikons that I can find, seem to run in the $350.00 to $400.00+ range (links):

Good luck with your search, ad let us know what you select.

I bought a nikon monarch 4x16x42 sf on e-bay for 328.00 shipped for a rem 700 sps .308 Apears to be comparable to a leuopold vx-11. Check out the new Redfield line. have not seen one personally but have read good reviews.

here is your best under 300 list; burris, mueller, vortex, bushnell, nikon, pentax,
swift, Weaver. I think I like Weavers the best, but the nikon with it's bdc reticle, just got voted Best and Top Buy, for the accuracy of the bdc, all the way out to 600 yds. it was tested against many others , and out of the top 10, It got best. This was going up against leupys', zeiss, Swarofski, nightforce, and a few other top scopes. Burris made the list as well...

The Nikon is the way to go. Don't expect to shoot the box year in and year out like you can with a $1000 Leupold, but it is trustworthy if you set it and leave it alone. Good glass too.

What are your opinios on the Bushnell Elite 4200 line?

Specifically the 4-12x40

Is this line better than the Bushnell Banner line as far as durability?

Bushnell Elite are the old Bausch & Lomb scopes. Great clarity, eye relief sucks (not an issue on a .223.)

Completely different beast than the banner.

I have a Nikon 4.5-14X Buckmaster with the BDC on my .223 AR. I use it primarily for shooting P. Dogs and I love the features and clarity of the Nikon.

I don't find a 4-12x in the Bushnell 4200 Elite line. However, the 4-16x40 has an eye relief of 3.5" which is not bad. I have one of those with an AO and the plex reticle on a .223 and I absolutely love it. You will have a hard time finding one for $300, but that's about what I paid at the time. You might get one on an auction site that cheap. It is worth another $100.

Bushnell
4200 - 4x zoom range e.g. 4-16x
3200 - 3x zoom range
6500 - 6x zoom range

Swaovski
Z3 - 3x zoom range
Z5 - 5x zoom range
Z6 - 6x zoom range

I am impressed with the bushnell elite series.. have a 4200 4x16 and a 3200 7x21. Picked up the 3200 REALLY cheap... but it was closeout from the wholesaler.. So, lucky onthat one..but it should still come in awfully close to your price range. The elite 3200 is my suggestion.

Check out the new Redfield scopes. They have a 4-12X variable priced at $219.99 and they are made here in US by Leupold. Discounters probably have them priced even cheaper.

I am still waiting for the new Redfields to come available around here... I want one pretty badly for my mauser in 257 roberts... think it would be perfect!!!

I put a Nikon Buckmaster 6 X 18 on my .22 Hornet. It's nice, but I would go with something better on a .223.
