I am wanting to start reloading for 223 since I just got an AR and have a feeling it will be hungry. :)

I want to go with the Lee Classic Turret Press (4 slot) and have the powder measure in one of the slots.

1) does the Lee Pro Auto disk work on this press or is it just for a progressive type press?
2) Should I save the 20 bucks and just get the standard Auto disk measure?
3) I assume I need the Lee Rifle charging die and the Auto Disk Riser to clear the Safety primer feeder - correct?

I have read on a few posts that the RCBS x-dies are the way to go to avoid trimming brass so I will probably go that way.

So in my turret I will have: a) RCBS X-sizer die to size/deprime b)Lee powder charging die with the powder measure above it c)RCBS seating die

What am I missing? Is the RCBS set a 2 die or 3 die set? If 3, what are the dies?

Sorry for the basic questions, just want to make sure I get this right.

Thanks for the help!:)

I don't know if I should say anything here but it worries me to have a powder measure mounted to the press or even to the same bench...every time it vibrates it changes the charge...what does everyone else think?

JonB,

"I want to go with the Lee Classic Turret Press (4 slot) and have the powder measure in one of the slots."

Shouldn't be a problem. You'll need the Pro Auto Disk, an Auto Disk riser and a rifle charging die.

Yes, it'll work great in this application. You'll need the Rifle charging die and an Auto Disk riser to clear the Safety Prime. BTW, buy the safety prime and the Pro Auto Disk to utilize the press's full potential.

"I have read on a few posts that the RCBS x-dies are the way to go to avoid trimming brass so I will probably go that way.

Rumor has it, I'd get the small base die as to avoid any feeding issues in a semi automatic rifle.

Sounds like a plan. I think I'd go with a Lee die set for the other items. I think you'll find you like the Lee seater better. You'll need the Lee rifle charging die for .223 if you want case activated powder drop.

"What am I missing? Is the RCBS set a 2 die or 3 die set? If 3, what are the dies?"

Generally RCBS die sets are two die sets that do not include a shellholder. Hence, were I you, I would buy the Lee Deluxe die set for .223 and a single Small base X-die. Also, when resizing a lot of the .223 military surplus, you run into machine gun fired brass, which requires more sizing, again, RCBS recommends a small base die in this application.

Don't sweat it. If you don't ask, you don't learn.

Regards,

Dave

almost all progressive presses have the powder measure mounted to the press. in the case of the dillon ones, it actually moves up and down every stroke (instead of the shellplate moving up to it)
