Congresswoman compares Osama to U.S. founders
Ohio's Kaptur says food, education will avert terrorism

In preparation for a seminar she will participate in tomorrow for priests and Catholic educators, an Ohio congresswoman compared Osama bin Laden to America's revolutionary founders.

"One could say that Osama bin Laden and these non-nation-state fighters with religious purpose are very similar to those kind of atypical revolutionaries that helped to cast off the British crown," Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, told the Toledo Blade.

Before launching a military strike against Iraq, Americans should consider their own history to remember how powerful the mix of religion and politics can be, she said.

"If you think back to our founding as a country, we are a country of revolution," said Kaptur.

She gave the interview in promoting a workshop for local Catholic leaders on the subject "Preaching and Teaching Peace in the Face of War."

When America "cast off monarchical Britain" in 1776, it involved the help of many religious people who had fled repression in other countries, the 11-term Toledo congresswoman said. She referred specifically to the Green Mountain Boys, a patriot militia organized in 1770 in Bennington, Vt., to confront British forces.

"I think that one thing that people of faith understand about the world of Islam is that the kind of insurgency we see occurring in many of these countries is an act of hope that life will be better using Islam as the only reed that they have to lean on," she said. "I think that people of faith understand that for many of the terrorists, their actions are acts of sacred piety to the point of losing their lives. And I think that people of faith understand that there is a heavy religious overtone to the opposition."

She added that a U.S. military campaign to oust Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein will not resolve the underlying problems leading to political and social upheaval.

"Even if we take the ground, we do not share the culture," she said. "And in the end we have to learn to coexist in a world with religious states that we may not agree with and find ways to cooperate."

Kaptur said her political and moral views were influenced by her family's tradition of Roman Catholicism and service in the U.S. Marine Corps and Army infantry.

"Our tradition is to exhaust all reasonable means before one goes to war, because our family, like so many others in our area, knows the price of war," she said.

Kaptur said she does not believe the standards of the "Just War Doctrine," developed by Saint Augustine in the fourth century, apply to the U.S.-Iraq showdown.

"I think that's why there is so much angst and division over this because we're in the gray area here," she said. "People of religious tradition are making their voices be heard very loudly on this one. I think there's sort of an instinctual sense that something isn't right here, and while they know there is a problem they are not sure that war is the solution."

Kaptur said the Catholic tradition calls for embracing the poor and the dispossessed. Thus, she believes, rather than initiate military action, the United States should try to counter the poverty and repression that she says breed terrorism in the Mideast.

"I think food and education will help stem the poverty of the young people who are being drawn into terrorism every day," she said.

Yesterday, Kaptur and Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, presented 13,000 anti-war poems to their colleagues in Congress.

Kaptur's pronouncements about bin Laden are reminiscent of Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., lauding the terror leader's nation-building tactics in December.

Murray said at the time that bin Laden has been "out in these [poor] countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven't done that."

Hitler loved dogs, too. Osama also built terrorist camps and financed the murder of thousands. I don't care if he did build Taliban KiddieKare centers on the side. The Inquisitionists in the Middle Ages built beautiful cathedrals, does that mean we should not condemn the whole torture thing?

Oh, and we've certainly "done that" as well. I'd wager that the US has sunk more money into Afghanistan'a infrastructure since the Taliban ousting than Osama has done since the Soviets left.

Maybe Patty Murray and Marcy Kaptur will grow up to be human shields.:D :neener:

You may have seen this one before, but it fits under this topic... :D

After getting nailed by a Daisy Cutter, Osama bin Laden makes his way to the pearly gates. There, he is greeted by George Washington.

"How dare you attack the nation I helped conceive!" yells Mr Washington, slapping Osama in the face.

Patrick Henry comes up from behind. "You wanted to end the Americans' liberty, so they gave you death!" Henry punches Osama on the nose.

James Madison comes up next, and says "This is why I allowed the Federal government to provide for the common defense!" He drops a large weight on Osama's knee.

Osama is subject to similar beatings from John Randolph of Roanoke, James Monroe, and 65 other people who have the same love for liberty and America. As he writhes on the ground, Thomas Jefferson picks him up to hurl him back toward the gate where he is to be judged. As Osama awaits his journey to his final very hot destination, he screams "this is not what I was promised!"

An angel replies, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you. What did you think I said?"

It still amazes me that the US populace elects this type and caliber of person to represent them in the Federal government.

But then again, WJC was elected to the Executive Mansion twice.

WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE THINKING? Or are they... thinking?

I guess dumping tea into a harbor is the equivalent of taking down two towers... "yeah, thats clear thinking mam. Thank you for your input. Now, about those nasty Assault Weapons?"

deep sigh

For some reason the song "Where have all the Cowboys Gone" keeps popping up in my mind. No particular reason, but I just like that line.

Adios

Osama builds orphanages, and commences to fill them at an inhuman rate, and these stupid :cuss:ing :cuss:s think he is a hero.

The mind boggles.:fire: :fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

D-Ohio/D-Washington!!!!!!!!!

THE DEMORATS/PEACENIKS WANT YOU ENSLAVED OR DEAD!!!!!!!

AND IT LOOKS LIKE THEY DON'T EVEN CARE WHO DOES THE ENSLAVING OR KILLING!!!!!!!!

WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing that characterized the Founding Fathers was religious tolerance, a virtue sadly lacking in OBL. Sadly lacking in Rep. Kaptur is historical perspective and knowledge and common sense.

They needed all those Taliban Kiddiecare type places because they were murduring the damn kids mothers! Anyone remember watching the video footage of women being shot in the head for showing their faces in public. And to add insult to injury they were killing them in a soccer stadium that UNICEF built for them, IIRC. These types of idiots make me sick! :barf:

Someone in her family needs to make sure her head is screwed on tightly.

Airhead. Bin Laden doesn't want a piece of the pie, he wants to destroy the pie.

A quick internet search reveals that Catholic influence of Ms. Kaptur's views applies only to certain parts of the Democratic party platform.

I'll leave it at that.

Yow. Let's take a good, hard look at that premise...

America's Founding Fathers -- Desired to cast off a repressive, non-representative government in favor of one established by the people under the rule of law, not the rule of an individual or one based on religious convictions.

Osama -- Desires to cast off representational government and replace it with a repressive government based on hard-line religious doctrine.

Oh yeah, OBL and the Founding Fathers have a LOT in common.

For some reason, I can't think of a single revolutionary militia soldier strapping explosives to himself and becoming a martyr by blowing up a group of loyalists.

No big surprise since she is out of Toledo Ohio (my mom's home town so I am a little bit familiar w/ the area).

Remember that woman's name since she was planning to run for president last I heard (I hope my uncle isn't still planning to vote for his former friend).:fire:

Toledo, like Detroit, is an Arabic population center in the US.

I suspect that this could be pandering.

They say violence doesn't solve anything but (though that's debateable), but every time she opens her piehole and starts spewing her filth someone should smack the crap out of her!! After a while all you'd have to do is wave at her and she'd start drooling and babbling incoherently.

It's not debatable at all. The overwhelming body of written/audio/video/artifact/human evidence shows that violence has solved lots of things.

Try as the left-wing might, they aren't going to be able to change or debate the meaning of the word "anything". At least not while breath remains in my body.:fire: :fire: :fire:

Just thought I would add a real life example to help the slow witted along.

I was seriously attacked once, and the person attacking me tried to choke me to death. I hit him twice in the head with a very large and heavy flower pot. The first hit stunned him a little. The second hit (with the shard left in my hand) cut his upper lip almost completely off. He stopped choking me.

Problem solved.
