The newest addition. Was trying to decide between an AR for the collection or a higher end 1911. After debating and getting input here decided on an AR since it's something I didn't have yet. After debating between a Colt LE6920 and a Daniel Defense, I decided to go with the DD since it seemed to have a couple upgrades that I would probably make anyway.

I was originally going to go with the V2 with the shorter rail (7" instead of 12" I believe) but then looked at DD rail prices, HOLY COW!!! Never thought that a rail could run significantly north of $300! So decided to go with the longer rail version (V1) with the thought that if I really don't like it, I can always sell/trade for the shorter one.

Question about the vertical grip though. It seems awfully awkward to me to steady the rifle using a vertical grip rather than the traditional normal grip just on the handguard itself. Is this something that is just preference, or is there an actual reason for it?

Also (and I know it's debated to death), but is there anything wrong with using steel cased ammo for range fodder? I'm thinking not, but never having owned an AR, I'm not an authority on it.

Fore grips are for close in quick shooting where you are driving the gun to a target. Again very close rage. If you find yourself shooting longer ranges then it will not do anything but annoy you. I ditched mine long ago, even for close up targets as I just could not get comfortable with it.

Steel cased ammo for an AR can be hit or miss. Your rifle may shoot it just fine or it may not. I would buy a few boxes first before I sank a bunch of money into something that my rifle does not like. I have seen ARs that shoot it just fine and I have seen ARs that grind to a halt because of it.

That's kind of what I was thinking about the grip. I'm pretty much thinking it's going to end up sitting in a drawer somewhere but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Thanks for the info about the ammo. I'll definitely try some before stocking up with one particular type.

Another question. I'm thinking about putting a carry handle on, but like the rear sight that's on the rifle right now. Is there such a thing as a carry handle that doesn't have an integrated sight on it that will mount on the top rail?

If not, what is a decent carry handle to use? There seem to be hundreds of them out there you can choose from.

The current sight you have enables the addition of a red dot where your irons can still function as a backup.

Regarding the forward grip, they are great if you practice with them and learn how to use them, but there are also great ways to shoot without (watch a 3 gun match, those guys rock and roll with their rifles)

Try magpul afg2. Far superior to the other hand grips. The funky ones with bipod are neat but the bipod was always too short for me, but I'm out of the AR game now and don't miss it at all.

I am with Robert 100% on this. I have tried them, and I just don't like them. I do kind of like the magpul angled fore grip, but even then I just don't personally see the need for it.
