Convert a cap and ball revolver to shotgun??

i shoot shot in my NAA Super Companion all the time. my recipe is a little over half the powder of what i would normally load it with. 2.5 grains of Triple Seven. then, a wad made from some newspaper wadded up and compacted. then a scoop of shot on top of each chamber, then an overshot wad of some thick cardboard i cut to a nice .22 wad, then i pour some candle wax on top of that to keep it from moving. the result is a very good shot load that is more powerful than a shot load from a regular CCI .22 cartridge shotshell. i also pulled some .22s, and used the primed cases to make shotshells. i am getting a .22 rifle pretty soon so i might need some shotshells to plink with! my recipe for .22 LR blackpowder shotshells is you take a primed case, put a grain of Triple Seven in there, compact it, and then put a newspaper wad on top of the powder. then, i just pour some fine shot into that sucker, then a card wad, then a few drops of melted beeswax. i tested these in my H&R 922, with a 6 inch barrel i bought from a friend a while ago. the pattern is nice and tight at 6 feet, i have confidence in them as a critter gitter load! they will penetrate wood well too, something the CCI shells won't do in my past experiences. they would just bounce off. i might have created the most powerful .22 shotshell! i had some rats in my neighbor's chicken coop he hired me to exterminate a while ago, he lived across the street from me, in a small neighborhood out in the country. I bet you these would have been more than perfect for killing the rats, i totally could have gotten away with using .22 shot for hunting the rats! the pattern is actually fantastic and does not really have any sort of hole in it from the rifling. what i also like to do is load a projectile on top, this is the greatest! you get a nice pattern, with a .22 hole in the middle for emphasis!

i made a pretty nice little wad cutting dye out of a steel tube that i sharpened, i can tap it into a piece of thick cardboard (the kind used to reinforce binders behind the fabric) then i can use a wire to push it out, wingo! some good homemade wads! that makes for some pretty effective shot loads! you could even soak em' in lube and use them like wonder wads, i love something if it has at least 3 purposes, and this has more. you can use them for under ball wads, over powder wads, over shot wads, blanks, etc.

i recently bought a used .357 Magnum handgun from a friend who was generous enough to give me a box of .38 and a box of .357 for cheap, restored it, restored the grips, re-finished the bluing, got it looking pretty and deadly again. i might want to load up some blackpowder shotshells for it sometime and test them out! i can bet these will be better than the factory loaded ones!

so, the moral of this story is use a tight fitting wad, a charge consisting of a compressed hot powder like Triple Seven FFFG, lead shot, and beeswax on top to keep the load moving from recoil. it is simple and easy to do! and also, spend a few short minutes making a wad cutting dye, it makes life much easier!

Sincerely, Levi "Hawken" Dabney
