Converted Mauser target/sniper?

Guess I'll just have to fire it to know if it is any good.
Absolutely, but it all sounds good so far. I'd remove the scope and plop it on a rimfire that I had ling around, or keep it for a temporary scope (it isn't really that bad, but it does have poor quality glass).

:)

I finally picked up the rifle and gave it a good going over.

Barrel is 26", with a recessed crown, measures .810" @ the muzzle, 1.2" @ the receiver. The trigger is decent and the the bolt has a low safety and is turned down (not the prettiest job I've seen).

The only question mark is the stock. It isn't bad-the barrel is free floated, but the floor plate is buried about 1/2" below the bottom of the stock. I'm not sure whether that will be a problem.

Came with a Bushnell Sportsman 4-12 scope (I know, I know...ewwww!)

I'm still thinking that this has possibilities as a starter "long range" rifle.

First, put some quality glass on it and shoot some quality ammo thru it. If it looks promising then:

1. The stock as it is inletted, could probably use some bedding in the lug area. The buried floor plate is cosmetic.

2. I do not have Branko's book or my shop manual here, but I think that is an itermediate action, so getting a replacement/better stock will be a difficult because they are not as common and 98 long actions.

3. It may also be safety breeched, which makes doing barrel work a little more complicated as well.

I say shoot it, evaluate it, at most, glass bed it if it does not work to suite you. Otherwise, use as is or move it.

I just double checked my Kuhnhausen manual before posting (just to be sure). Mr Pale Horse is correct. This is an intermeadiate action and stocks for a standard length M98 action won't fit.

Glass bedding on the trigger guard area of the stock can get your guard flush with the stock. That's a good looking rifle that looks like it's got lots of potential.

Finally got to the range and fired this yesterday...using the cheapo Bushnell sportview scope.

The scope mounting is messed up somehow...with the reticle adjusted all the way down, the rifle still shoots about 18" high @ 50 yards. It may be an illusion, but the scope appears to be lower in front than back...almost like the rear ring is higher than the front.

At any rate, the rifle appears to shoot fairly well, given the limitations of the scope, etc.

I fired three 150 grain Federal Powr-shoks (the three on the right), then adjusted the rear screws of the base and fired one more Powr-shok. Then 5 Federal GMM matches that all landed in the single square. Bear in mind that I was shooting at 50 yards and at an orange target spot that was about 18" below the point of impact, with the scope adjusted as low as it would go.

I plan on getting a better scope and a new set of rings. Any other ideas?

Thanks
