I'm thinking about purchasing a FAL in California configuration and I'm curious how difficult it would be to convert it to a non-California configuration. Since I don't live in CA I don't see any reason to keep it in this config

The gun in question has a fixed mag, and the upper receiver pops open so you can feed the fixed mag with stripper clips. I'd like to know how difficult it is to convert the FAL to accept detachable magazines but haven't found much look through searches. Thoughts?

I'd ask over at FALFiles, but you will be asked why in the world you'd purchase such a thing if you didn't have to.

The easy answer is to just buy a new lower, since the upper is the "gun" in the world of FALs. You can then pull the internals and put them into the new lower. The truly easy route would be just to purchase a complete lower with internals. That will cost under $175 from SARCO and other sources.

To the particular problem, how is the mag attached? My understanding is that CaliFals have to have the mag attached in such a way that it is not easily removed.

Will ask falfiles, and I'm considering purchasing it because it could potentially be a good deal depending on how much extra work/money I have to put into it to change it from fixed mag to detachable mag.

I don't know how the mag is attached, so potentially it could be welded in place or something else that is not easily reversible.
