I can't believe there has been so little public attention paid to this "tweak" of the Cook County Assault weapon bill. Watching what little news coverage of this bill presented gave the impression that only the definitions were changed to prevent gun makers from skirting the law.

Look at the second to last item, Ordinance 06-O-50
This ordinance adds to the restrictions put forth in the bans previously passed in Cook County and equates magazines that hold more than 10 rnds to assault weapons in terms of the penalties for possession/transfer/sale/etc.
So not only are your STI race gun and Glock 17C/19C/22C/21C assault weapons, each magazine, which was previously legal to own, is now an assault weapon on its own. Yes, each magazine is subject to all the same penalties as the pistols!
Remington 1187 w/ 7 rnd magazine tube? Assault Weapon.
Mini-14? Even with its non-threatening woodstock and 5rnd Bill Ruger approved magazine. Assault Weapon
Have a stock 11/87 and a magazine extension for an 870. That is a kit or combination of parts that would allow for the construction of an assault weapon. Possession of both parts by the same person = Assault weapon. Constructive Possession, just like our Federal JBTs like to use. What if you own the 11/87 and have an 870 with extension? Kit or not? You'll have to find out in court.
M1 Carbines were given a last minute repreieve. Just be sure to get rid of all your 15rnd mags and recoil check. And that handguard is kinda iffy. Probably should dump it too :banghead:
The gracious masters of the county of Cook have alloted us 90 days to turn them in for destruction, or face fine and imprisonment. They failed to mention that they have taken a whole slew of items that were previously legal to own and made them contraband, while burying the legislation from public view and downplaying the significance of the legislation to the news media.
Where are the messages from the CC Board on every news station (in both Spanish and English)? Where are the flyers for each household in Cook county? Cook County made a portion of its population criminals overnight (well, those that were not already) and didn't feel it was worth informing the electorate.
Any lawyers out there want to peruse this ordinance and chime in. Under Applicability in the bills General Provisions it lists the following:
(a) This article shall control the licensing of all firearms dealers within Cook County except in home rule municipalities which have a separate municipal ordinance specifically regulating the licensing of firearms dealers.
Would the following article therefore not apply to those who are not licensed dealers? Further down they prohibit "any person" from selling/displaying/possessing assault weapons. Can we presume it applies only to those "any people" who are dealers, as stated in the applicability portion of the ordinance? As much as I'd like the previous statements to be true, I'd hate to be so naive as to think that words in such documents actually represent the common use by the rest of the world.
