MIAMI -- A Miami-Dade County police officer was hospitalized briefly after he was shot in the chest early Friday while wearing a bulletproof vest.
Officer Chad Murphy was part of a burglary detail of uniformed and plainclothes officers patrolling the Cutler Ridge area, spokesman Detective Randy Rossman said.
After a patrol car in the unit was struck by a rock, police determined it had been thrown from a house, where they went to investigate.
While two officers went to the front door, Murphy and another officer went to the backyard to search for suspects, Rossman said. Several shots were then fired from the home, hitting Murphy, he said.
Rossman said Murphy was taken to Baptist Hospital, where he was treated and released.
``The vest he was wearing probably saved his life,'' Rossman said.
Another officer returned fire on the house, and a resident was injured by broken glass, Rossman said. That person's minor injuries were treated on the scene, he said.
Rossman said detectives were still investigating the incident, and no charges had been filed.
