Police respond to shooting at Miami mall; two hurt

The Associated Press
1:18 PM EST, December 1, 2008

MIAMI - Authorities are responding to a shooting at Dadeland Mall in suburban Miami.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Eddy Ballester says one person was transported to the hospital by helicopter with reported gunshot wounds. Officials were attending to another victim on the scene. The gender of the two victims and their specific injuries were unknown.

Fire-Rescue got a telephone call at 11:17 a.m. Monday with a report of one person shot.

Aerial news footage of the scene showed a Dunbar armored car parked in front of the mall surrounded by police and Miami-Dade fire rescue officials. Police said the mall was temporarily shut down.

This is my mall. It's about 3 miles from my apartment.

It's always a "remote possibility" until it happens where YOU live.
My mother lives one suburb over from Tinley Park, IL where a guy recently herded six women into the back of a Lane Bryant store. He shot and killed all but one. Naturally, there's no CCW in Illinois.

We got there about 1 hour after the shooting. We didn't know before hand that anything happened, but as we drove up - the copters and all of the cop cars suggested something. I figured that all was over and went into the mall. About everything was open for business except by the Ltd. I said to my wife something about her carrying her Jframe. She said that me and my H&K were enough.....

Bottom line - Armored car holdup. At least one shot - possibly 2.

Here's an update.

A man was fatally shot at Dadeland Mall Monday morning during a suspected armored car robbery, according to Miami-Dade police.

Police issued a bulletin to officers to look out for a white 2000 Lincoln sedan, with the Florida tag L83AY. Two men carrying a moneybag had fled in the car.

One suspect was a thin 5-foot-10, with a black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, boots and a silver handgun. The other had a heavier build and wore a blueish hoodie.

Miami-Dade homicide detectives are now investigating.

A red Dunbar armored car sat outside the store at the Kendall mall's south side. The mall had re-opened Monday except for The Limited/Express area.

''Our hearts and prayers go out to the victim, his family and friends. We have no further information at this time,'' mall officials said in a prepared statement.

Police and paramedics arrived at the mall shortly after the shooting, which occured at about 11:15 a.m.

Police sealed off both of the mall's North Kendall Drive entrances, and mall employees said the mall was on lock-down.

Police reported that both men people were seen fleeing a store with a money bag.

Joanne Brown was inside the Limited doing Christmas shopping when she heard shots sound from the Express store next door.

''It was eight shots. I heard them all. It was very scary. I'm still shaken up,'' said Brown, who was supposed to fly home to the Cayman Islands Monday afternoon.

She had to wait inside yellow police tape to be interviewed by investigators. At 12:15, she gave her report and was allowed to go home, her bag of Limited goods in tow.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Eddy Ballester said that more than 25 firefighters were at the mall, ready to treat anyone injured.

The man who was shot was transported by air rescue to the Ryder Trauma Center, and another person was treated by paramedics.

''The extent of the injuries at the moment is unknown,'' Ballester said.

''But we have multiple resources there,'' he assured.

My brother lives in Coral Gables, scarcely two or three miles from that mall.

Frankly, I never liked the Miami area.

The Armored Car guard died. Still no description of the perps broadcast on Ch 7. I really hope that there are security cameras in the store. The shooting was IN the Limited store.

That's a first rate description!!!

Now all the cops have to do is arrest a guy who is 5'10", thin, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, and some other guy who is "heavier" and is wearing a "blueish hoodie."

Bet there aren't two other guys in the Miami Dade area who match that description!!

If only 5% of the population CCWed, a life of crime turns into a dangerous game of Russian Roulette.
Those that don't (or won't) exercise the 2nd Amendment benefit from the actions of those that do.

I went to Dadeland last week with my CCW. My roomate laughed when I left the house with it and I said, "You never know" and left. I guess I won that one. He still thinks I'm a gun nut though. I guess he wont understand where I'm coming from until he is staring down the business end of a criminal's gun. I read about stuff all the time in this area. If he wants to be a sheep, that's on him. I enjoy living, my CCW raises my chances that I'll continue to enjoy it. It just won't happen to him... until it does.

I have a mall close to me and another in an adjacent town not too far away and I always carry in both of them. I don't think they are posted but I have never looked too close.

, but I bet an executive order could state that as long as the gubmint decommissions them as semi (without autosears, etc.) with different internals they could sell them.
that is the problem. most people think of us (in general) as "gun nuts".we need to break this stereotype somehow.
