I have a chance to pick up a 1918 dated erfurt 98 sporterized for $100 all matching except the bolt I'm thinking of restoring it as the only thing altered is the stock. The question is: What is a correct stock for this rifle? I think any large ring mauser stock will work but is there any one particular stock I should be looking for?
Thanks.............

Would anyone know if some of the contract mausers made around that time, south american, used the same stock? It seems the argentine mausers stock looks like the stock I need with a different handguard. The more I think about it, the less excited I am about this restoration as the bolt will probably need to be changed also.

If it was a GEW 98 it had a 29 inch barrel which was likely shortened if it was sporterized. It would also have the large ring receiver and a straight bolt handle originally. If it was a KAR 98 then it had a 24 inch barrel and turned down bolt with a small receiver ring. The KAR model would be much easier to return to original condition.

Thanks for the help. It is a GEW and I passed. It took me 3 months to find a 98K stock I was satisfied with once and I think finding this stock would be too time consuming.
