I picked up a nice 98 Mauser rebarreled to 30-06 at a gunshow last weekend. It has a really racy Weatherby inspired stock which is wearing a Herter's plastic buttplate. Did Herter's ever sell complete replacement stocks for 98 Mausers or is this just a Herter's buttplate on someone else's custom stock?

It's a nice stock, but not for a lefty like me! The rollover cheekpiece is definitely not lefty friendly!

herters sold stocks in several different levels of finish, barreled actions and even mauser kits that included a barreled action, a semi inlet stock & a few of the tools needed to assemble and finish the stock.
i would love to have one of their mauser kits for my collection. about once a year one an intact kit still new in box comes up for auction but they bring some serious money.

Yep that is a good looking Herters Stock there. Looks to be one of their mid 70's ones. I've got a couple laying around here somewhere waiting for me to get time to finish up a couple of 98 actions to be laid in. The old Herters stocks, as Jim let out the bag, tend to fetch a pretty penny at auction. That one there should fetch you more than enough to find you a nice lefty stock as well as get it bedded and action trued :)

I hope you're right about the pretty penny because I just put it up on eBay. I seriously considered just breaking out the wood rasp and taking that sharp edge off but it seems like a waste to destroy the value of it if someone might want it. As long as I get enough out of it to buy a replacement that fits me I'll be happy.

My last visit to Herters in Waseca, MN was in the late 60's. They had on close out a barrel full of complete Mauser and BSA barreled actions. I also found a Cherry wood stock for a mauser action 90% inleted . $25.00 for the barreled action and $10 for the stock. 7mm Rem Mag.

Herters sold stocks in many different grades and woods.

Could this stock be cherry? It seems too light for walnut. I know the tip and grip cap are walnut.

Yep, they went dirt cheap back in the 60's and 70's. You would be dumbfounded to see how much some of those "El'Cheapos" go for now. I saw one go for 300 bucks that looked quite a bit like that one you have there.
