When using Straight 8 Heine sights, is the correct sight alignment the same as with 3 dot?

Maybe it's just the way I shoot, but I found on this weekend's trip to the range that the most true impact on a target 7 yards away is lining up the center of the target in the middle of where the top(front) and bottom (rear) dots of the sights with where I want the round to go. I was getting just over .5" groups when I started shooting this way intentionally.

Is this correct, or is my pistol shooting low?

The correct alignment of Heinies (which are great sights) or any other conventional post-and-notch type sight (including 3-dot) makes no reference to the dots except in low or no-light situations. The very top edge of the front sight post should be level with the top edge of the rear sight blade, and the post should be centered in the notch. The gun should put the bullet at the top center-point of the front sight blade if it's aligned as in this PDF:

Thank you Christopher - for both the reply, and the diagram! I've brought my 9 year old daughter to the range with my fiance and I to the range and have been trying to find something that shows the correct picture. This will work great for her!

Thanks much!

The sight Diagram doesnt always look like that, Some guns don't shoot point of aim some guns you must put the front sight above the the rear. Some shoot point of aim some shoot at what is call the 6o'clock position. In which the point of impact is above the front sight.(different guns, different sights) Every gun handles different and is shot different by different people. Every gun has a sweet spot it just takes time to figure out each gun. Most of the time when people think there gun is shooting low it's normally just a bad grip or trigger habit that's unintentional.
