County brushes off gun misfire at Schererville center

SCHERERVILLE -- It sounds like something out of a "Police Academy" movie.

Cook County correctional officer Jermaine Bell, 36, of Lynwood, Ill., was at the Schererville Golf and Fun Center with his son late Sunday when he took out his gun and accidentally fired it into the ground.

Schererville police responded to the scene at 10:11 p.m. Bell told them he was trying to put the safety on when he accidentally fired the weapon. Bell showed police his Cook County officer's badge, and said he was carrying a Glock 7 handgun.

But Cmdr. Randy Reno of the Schererville Police Department said a Glock doesn't have an external safety switch. And a Glock 7 isn't even a real gun. It's a fictitious, porcelain gun-type fabricated for the 1990 action movie "Die Hard 2."

Reno said Schererville police presented a case for criminal recklessness to the Lake County Prosecutor's office, which declined to file charges. Prosecutors deemed the case an accident, saying it failed to meet the criteria for the charge.

Reno said he was disappointed by their decision.

"Fortunately nobody was hurt," Reno said. "It was a very poor case of judgment on (Bell's) part."

Reno did say Bell will be cited for discharging a firearm within Schererville limits, a violation of a town ordinance.

Penny Mateck, spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office, said that Bell has been a nighttime guard at the Cook County Jail in Chicago for more than two years.

Mateck said Bell was de-deputized Wednesday, pending an internal investigation.

I'm not even gonna add any special comments...I think the rest of ya'll can handle it for me, heh.

Maybe he thought you had to pull the safety to activate it and pulled too far(assuming he at least got the Glock part right)?

I'm still curious as to what he was actually carrying. If it was a Glock, it goes beyond saying that he's a moron no matter how you cut it since they obviously have no external "safety". Other than that, I'm generally wondering what drove him to randomly unholster his sidearm to make sure it was on safe in the middle of a public area.

I think it's safe to say Mensa isn't going to be beating his door down any time soon.

If this guy had been a 'civilian' he would have been burned in effigy on the evening news. At least he was 'de-deputized' while they teach him that Glocks have no external safeties.

What the hell is a Glock 7, and why does it have a safety?

ohhhh.... that's the fictitious part.... gotcha.

I'm guessing it was a Glock 17 and for some reason he thought the take-down lever was a safety..... because..... well either he was dumb (because if you're a cop and you know nothing about your own gun - you're lifeline.... you're best buddy when somebody starts shooting at you... - you have to be dumb, especially if you don't even know what make/model you carry and whether or not it has a safety!).... or he was drunk or high.

Why do the words "I'm the only one qualified..........." keep running through my head?

well.... maybe it's the same guy. The bullet in the foot guy was DEA. Maybe after that incident he got transferred to the dept of corrections. What state was he in?

It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. It doesn't show up on your airport X-ray machines, and it costs more than you make here in a month. :neener:

Maybe I'm out of the loop on this:

Illinois Corrections officers are not Peace Officers under state law--they can't carry except on duty AFAIK. Now, if he was carrying on a CCW permit valid in Indiana, issued somewhere other than Illinois because Illinois doesn't issue, that might explain things. And I know---he's employed by Cook County--so it's anyone's guess.

But even in that place, the laws of physics still apply. Amazing.

I always carry my Glock "7" when I play golf, you never know when those dangerous ground hogs are gonna' attack. Besides, what idiot is going to try to play through, if he knows you are carrying a "piece"?

I always

carry 2 Glock 7s in case the first one jams. It's a little known fact that the all porcelan guns and all porcelan ammo jam wuite a bit, so I like to have a new york reload.

If I am sitting on my porcelan throne, I always like to have the porcelan gun along.

I have a Glock 8.5. It is 100% plastic and shoots bullets made from recycled water bottles. It has a safety and is full-auto.

There are a lot of guns like that in 209's own little special world. Tell any reporter to grab a helmet, get on the short bus and come here. I'll show 'em!

Do they not teach journalists to check their facts before they publish an article?

I wonder if they would cut me the same slack, if i pulled up my gun in a mall, and shot accidentally at the ground

209, did you miss the best part?

The reporter obviously checked with Commander Reno, who set things straight.

I just really REALLY want to know why he said that--did he think he was being funny?

It sounds like ofc Bell screwed up and tried to make an excuse that would sound plausible. He just happened to screw up on the facts, which means he lied to the police.

Why wasn't he charged with obstruction of justice?

gun misfire

Reporters don't usually write their own headlines, so there is another layer of ignorant clerkdom calling a ND a "misfire." It sure didn't miss fire, it went off like it was supposed to when he pulled the trigger. Anything else is about 99.9% sure to be a lie.

Funny, since journalists seem to get everything wrong when it comes to stories involving guns. I think they do it on purpose to piss us off since they are all lefties.

well, once you see his picture it's more understandable

I still don't quite see what fact Levy got wrong. He noted that the story made no sense. What did you want him to do, throw in a couple of LOLLERSKATES?

Somebody misused misfire, but that's not a big deal, and as noted, Levy probably didn't write the headline. I'm not sure Levy would even agree that the county "brushed off" the incident. They stripped him of police powers and are running an investigation.

We won't be able to say they brushed it off until they quietly reinstate him in two months with back pay.

was at the Schererville Golf and Fun Center with his son late Sunday when he took out his gun and accidentally fired it into the ground.

WHY ON EARTH WAS HE HANDLING HIS FIREARM IN AN ARCADE?

Or even in public for that matter?
