SHOT show was excellent this year. I went as a manufacturers representative, and I’m now working in the gun industry, though I can’t really reveal what I’m doing yet, though it will be very cool.

There were many neat guns and products, let me see if I can remember the ones that stuck out the most. Don’t ask me any difficult questions, because I’m still tired, cranky, and I’ve got 400 lbs of literature packed into my bags. I’m a black gun kind of guy, so I probably did not really pay attention to any of the classical pretty type guns, though there were some gorgeous guns present.

The GOOD:

Robinson XCR. I still think this is the coolest new rifle out there, but as you know, I’m biased because I helped beta test it. There was much interest in this gun. I think it is going to kick butt.

Most folks have not heard of Sabre AR15s, but Sabre makes a ton of stuff for the military, and has done so for many years. They have a line of very nice AR rifles now. I was impressed, and I’m not normally an AR fan. As far as I could tell these were very well made, and are in the same class as the fancy AR rifles at a good price. They also have a line of suppressed AR rifles, including what is probably the coolest little suppressed AR I have ever seen.

The F2000 from FN is interesting. I got to field strip it, and also spent some time with some of their people in a meeting. The design is not nearly as complicated as I thought it would be from the pictures. I like this rifle. It is far comfier than expected. Depending on the civilian price, it should sell pretty good.

The PX4 Storm impressed the heck out of me. The pistol itself was pretty cool, but I went to an armorer’s demonstration, and then I could really see what the appeal was going to be. This gun is very unit armorer friendly, and is priced to go head to head with the Glock. I have not been the biggest Beretta fan, but for a PD gun, I thing Beretta is really onto something here.

The CZ SP01 was neat. It is just a big CZ75 with beavertail and light rail, but it is a very appealing gun. Probably going to be around $600. And just so you know, CZ is not insane, the bayonet attachment was a joke. Angus thought it was funny.

I’m a shotgun nut. Ithica has brought back a riot version of the 37. And you can get it with the disconnect removed so that you hold down the trigger and pump away. Very slick shotgun. It was going to be around $500-$600 if I recall correctly.

There was a prototype .50. Semi, 5 shot mag, side fed. About the size of the Serbu, invented by the same guy who did the Anzio and the Safety Harbor guns. It is similar in weight to the Serbu, and if this thing works it is going to be awesome. Should be around $3,500.

Rohrbaugh is still the coolest little gun out there. Nice folks too.

Bushmaster’s carbon fiber stuff seems to have worked out the bugs that plagued Pro Ord. I spoke with some LE folks who tested the heck out of one of them, and it worked great. The SBR carbon gun with the M4 stock would make an amazing entry gun. The one I played with had a Trijicon Tripower, and it just begged for a suppressor. This thing is one sweet handling little gun.

There was pile of neat gear, but I’ll go into more detail about that later, especially since I’m going to be selling a whole bunch of it in a few months. I’m talking about some amazing stuff, at really good prices. Yee haw!

The BAD:

Some companies really need to work on their customer service. I won’t say who, because I’m sure it would rile up their hard core fans, but if you are a company rep, and somebody comes up to you and makes a comment about how your gun could be made better, don’t treat the customer like he is stupid, and doesn’t know how to shoot. I watched this occur, and I knew the customer making the comment. He is a military officer, veteran of multiple wars, and current SWAT team leader. This guy has seen more action than 99.9% of the people there. Maybe just maybe you should get off of your Bavarian high horse, shut your stupid mouth, and listen to the guy’s valid comments for a second. Sorry, had to vent.

The UGLY:

The Israelis showed off their Corner Shot, shoot around corners, gun holder thingy. Wow… No, it does not play DVDs, and no they don’t appreciate it when you ask that. My theory is that it is for shooting Palestinian rioters with out getting hit by rocks.

I had a little fun with EAA. I told them I represented a chain of sporting goods stores across the Rocky Mountain west, and that I wanted to begin carrying some of their products. My initial order was for 500 Saiga shotguns, and 1000 Saiga rifles. I was able to do this in a totally deadpan manner. Had them going for a minute. That was fun. (in case you didn’t know, they quit importing them). Now for some good news for Saiga fans, Remington bought the rights to Baikal, not Saiga. According to EAA, the Saiga importation has gone to a company in Tennessee. They either really did not know who, or they weren’t allowed to say. So maybe we might be getting more Saigas.

That is what I can think of for now.

Thanks Larry,

Sounds like you had good time. I know about that "good tired feeling" from shows. Congrats on the new deal that came your way.

Got a pic of the Ithaca Riot 37 ? I'm more of a Wood & Blue kinda of scattergunner myself.. :D

El T - maybe Larry is gonna sell flowered shirts with shot shell loops built in... :D

3...2...1...email from Larry the Moderator...I timed that just right . :p

Any idea about SP-01 release dates? Thanks for the update. Will the bayo mount go into production? It would be suuuweeet if I could attach my garand bayonet to the end of my SP-01, it would give me a serious standoff weapon after I've exhausted by ammo. ;)

This show had what we called camera nazis. They really cracked down on any non-press badge photographing. So I didn't take any pictures.

However I'm sure Jeff OTMG will post some pics on his site. I was there for an almost James Bondish behind the scenes convoluted maneuvering for Jeff to find a way to get pictures. It was cool. :D

Steve, it was pretty ugly for an Ithica. Just kind of flat black. But it was slicker than snot. :p (the 37 and the BPS are the only other pump guns that I really like besides 870s)

El T, I'm but an aspiring gun writer. (check out this month's issue of SWAT, how about that for shameless self promotion).

More cool stuff, Cyre camo uniforms are flipping awesome. Imagine, actual military outfits that make sense!

Oh, and one more thing; CZ has a prototype RAMI with a polymer frame. Imagine a RAMI that doesn't weigh as much as a brick. I thought it had potential.

The Kahr Thompson was nice, but their SBR Thompson was more nice. :) Especially with the violin carrying case.

Some companies really need to work on their customer service. I won’t say who, because I’m sure it would rile up their hard core fans...

That's right. You show them who's boss. I think you've sent a clear message to them. That message being "Your employees can act like total asses, and your won't have to fear loss of sales, or complaints".

Seriously though, tell me.

got a link to sabre ar15 anywhere? google seems confused and that means I'm confused

Oh goody...I'm gonna point something out to a BIG guy, that can outshoot me, and is a moderator to boot. Never said I was smart now did I ? :D

Ithaca's ain't ugly - some just have more character than others. ;)

Sure - you can quote me...only darn way I'll ever make the pages of SWAT... :p

It was good to meet you at the dinner, and thanks for the report. :)

This show had what we called camera nazis. They really cracked down on any non-press badge photographing. So I didn't take any pictures.

I'd heard this, and when I was talking to hoggunner after the Show he kept talking about all the pics he took. I said "What? What about the camera nazi's?" and he said he took pics all over and never had a problem. Weird. He said there was a sealed-off "New Products" area and he thinks the picture policy was for that area maybe. He never had a problem though.

SHOT Show Comments

I'm over my flu - had me down for the past few days. Made the SHOT show on Monday, the final day of the show. Couple of quick comments:

1. Camera Nazis. Saw only 2 of them, both low brow knuckle draggers slothing their way through the show like they were trying to find the bathroom. Didn't seem like they had a lot of "Situational Awareness". Funny because I saw one guy taking a picture of the back of one Camera Nazi's blue cop-like raid jacket that said "Camera Patrol". The whole thing struck me as hilarious.

2. Booth Babes. Saw like two, maybe, in the whole place. Last year we had booth babes all over the place, lots more cameras, and people seemed to be groovin' on it.

3. Outdoor Section. Nice selection of ATVs, hunting stuff, fishing stuff, camping stuff, Adventure Vacations & more. Seems like they are getting more creative and user-friendly every single year.

4. Tactical Section. Noticed there were less "Wanna-Be's" this year. To me the tactical section seemed to have slight more this year than last, and the variety of choices and creativity of the vendors was very good.

Next Year -> No Camera Nazis, More Booth Babes.

I didn't see any new 10mm stuff, but I wasn't really looking.

As for what company had the rude salesman, I dropped a not so subtle hint in the post. They didn't have a great big horn there, or any free hot chocolate either. Bastards. :p Super cool guns though.

In their defense, I can see why people would get grouchy. By day three, you are just plain worn out.

Most of the booth babes were in the law enforcement section this time around. Also, I was told I missed a few when I was distracted by various cool guns.

Valkman, it was good to meet you. Wish I could have talked to you more. It was fun, but since we were spread out over such a long, skinny table, you really only get to talk to the folks right next to you. I sat by JRhines and Chris Rhines, Jen from Fal Files, and the guys from FAC. They were all very friendly folks. I didn't get to talk to 444 or Citizen much either. The Russian guys were friendly too. I hooked up with them the next day to get the low down on some groovy Russian gear. Great fellas.

And I'll get the web page for Sabre. They have been making barrels, parts, and weapons mounts for the military for a long time. They also are importing the Sphinx from Switzerland. Nice gun, but out of my demographic. Like I said, I'm not an AR person, but these impressed me. They also impressed the hard core AR guys and gunsmith I was working with. I'll find their catalog tonight.

There were lots of really big absurd tactical knives. Many of them had their own heavy metal music videos with fireballs and swooshes and Navy SEALs jumping through windows to dispatch tangos with with ubertactical super knives.

Oh, thought of another thing. XD fans will be happy. They are coming out with extended magazines that hang out a little bit. The 9mm will hold 20, and the .40 was unknown at this time, but is the same size, so I'm guessing 17 or 18.

4. Tactical Section. Noticed there were less "Wanna-Be's" this year.

Yeah, I couldn't get the days off work :neener:

But you did see me in the knife videos swinging through the air :D

New keyboard, please!

Drink blown through my nose just ruint this one. :D

And I was, thinking, "Gee, I need more XD mags!"
Now I know to hold off a bit. Thanks.

The Saber Def M series rifles and cans are the heat. I hope to have one very soon, relatively soon if the ATF drags their feet on transfers as has been the case as of late.

It was my first time at the show, but I saw a ton of booth babes and hot females working for various companies. Then again I have a radar that cant be turned off or defeated by Correias "sphere of holiness".

There were many impressive products and at the show. The Crye was VERY impressive and we will be working closely with them and Blackwater to carry the full line of gear, as well as some other gear made in the same pattern.

While the vaporware, I mean Shrike was cool, the M series belt fed offered by another vendor was extremely cool. Semi auto, RDIAS capable and configurable in various style. Much less than the Shrike. They also have a G3 belt fed without the quick change barrel.

Very cool gear and people all the way around.
