Cost of an M16?

not sure about the A4 but I think I remember seeing in FEDLOG that an A2 cost about $460

I'm not looking for the civilian cost as it would be greatly inflated by rarity and the fact that it is automatic.
Plus the fact that it would have had to be registered prior to 1986, before the A4 was around (although I don't think the lowers changed much from A1-A4)
I recall a story of a PD armorer getting surplus M16A1s from the national guard for $25 each :banghead:

You gotta be kidding me that's how much M16 Assault Rifles cost. That means we get ripped off as civilians for inferior weapons without all the capabilities at high prices.

... Do you buy them by the tens of thousands? How about requiring competitive bidding between contractors who know the difference between happy shareholders and bankruptcy can be $10 on the purchase price? It's called volume buying -- the same reason why Costco is popular. I'm glad the U.S. Army isn't paying more than $400 a rifle, as we have plenty of spending problems in this country...

Besides, I'm not overly offended because I don't have the money to run thousands of rounds through a full-auto... more of a toy, actually. I don't really expect to have to lay down a suppressing fire, except to make a run for the dinner line at Thanksgiving, hehe :D.

Afterwards, the price of a basic M4 dropped to $815, and with Colt-provided BUIS and ARS only $1,142 (W52H09-04-D-0086-0040). At the time of the final sole-source delivery order in December 2010, Colt’s price was just over $1,221 per fully-equipped carbine (W52H09-07-D-0425-BR02).

Yep, per the online inflation calculator I use:

"What cost $189.50 in 1965 would cost $1295.51 in 2010."

I'll take two $600 S&W's, please. ;)

How much for the railed variety that's popular now? Or do the mil armorers swap all that stuff on a need to ave basis?

I heard they get Aimpoints and ACOGs for less than half of what we pay as well. But when we're talking $10mil+ buys that's still big business.

Wow, never took a business class, eh?

You aren't getting ripped off when you WILLINGLY pay your money

Actually, I've heard other wise on the acog dunno bout aim point. But i scored my ACOG for less than my brother in law gets as an armorer. They also pay more for Pmags than I do. plus the way the govt does things I'm sure the math doesn't add up. Thats not to say you arn't getting ripped off of course lol.
