I was just quoted $50 to ship a handgun through fedex up the eastern seaboard, about 5 states north. That seems really expensive to ship a gun, so I just thought I would check with THR. If it really is this expensive, its the last time I buy a handgun online, because its quickly adding up to what a store bought one would cost with dealer markup.

Yeah that's about right for overnight shipping. When shopping for deals online you have to factor in shipping.

UPS cost me $62 from CA to NY on my Kimber for over night shipping... they were nice, almost gave me a heart attack at 25 yr old... lost my gun for 3-1/2 days but found it and had it to KMI on the 5th day ;)

shipping

20 bucks from North Carolina to Texas. I think USPS Priority if I'm not mistaken. Took 3 days.

In general the firearm has to be shipped to a FFL dealer. Shipping next day at $50 via Fedex may seen like a lot, but I do it all the time. Think about what it would cost you to physically drive the firearm to the destination. $50 is a bargain.

Well, to ship overnight but I use the cheapest option, which is Fedex Standard Overnight. I also get a company discount so it useally cost about $22-$30 with insurance to most places in the US. On a side note I sent a handgun to Ruger in NH once to be repaired and they shipped it back 2nd-Day UPS. I called them about this since I wanted to ask why they did not ship overnight, and the customer service rep said that Overnight shipping is not mandatory by Federal law, and only a scam by the shipping companies to make money, so Ruger decided to ship all handguns by UPS 2nd Day to save money. In addition the reason handguns have to be shipped by express service is because there where many cases of theft by shipping company employees when handguns where sent by ground. The BATF cracked down and made the compaines come up with a plan to counter the theft, or face pressure to stop shipping firearms. They made a deal with the BATF to have all handguns go by Overnight service. The BATF agreed to this, but never stated in any regulations that handguns have to go Overnight. Though it is best to send them by Overnight or at least 2nd Day since if the package is lost, the company might not reimburse you for the loss, if they find out what is in the package because you did not follow their rules.

ask for the least expensive "overnight" option. for UPS that's the Overnight Air Saver option. the most expensive overnight option gets the package delivered in the morning. the least expensive delivers it by the afternoon...but "overnight" nonetheless...and cheaper...

I am currently selling my Magnum Research Desert Eagle package: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=226884 and checked the rates for an interested buyer a few states down out of Texas. UPS will NOT accept a firearm from me to an FFL ( I am not an FFL). USPS faxed over their policy indicating that they will NOT accept a handgun from me for shipping to any entity. FedEx's website charged me about $130 for the entire package as the ammo has to ship separately. I estimated the weight at around 12 LBS if I remember correctly as the entire package system is quite hefty.

If my cost was $50, I would have the package sold by now.

UPS overnight was $47

from Iowa to Ruger in New Hampshire. This included a "rural delivery fee" and some extra money for insurance up to $500. It was also an overnight delivery. Took less than 24 hours from the time I dropped it off here to delivery the next day in NH before noon.

That is NOT UPS policy, that is a counter clerk's interpretation of policy. That's why there are supervisors and a customer service number. You did go to a UPS hub didn't you; the UPS Store cannot ship firearms or any hazardous materials.

actually, it is their policy. they only ship firearms from non-ffl to a gunsmith or manufacturer for the purpose of repair or modification only. you(non-ffl) cannot use UPS to sell a firearm(even if you are sending it to a FFL).

If you're shipping a handgun to a FFL via fedex or UPS you are not by law obligated to disclose its a handgun. UPS and fedex policy requires it though and they will make you ship overnight. More than a few people ship "machine parts" via ground service with extra insurance. You won't be violating any laws, but your insurance claim might be harder...of course is they have the gun to prove its a firearm and not machine parts, its not really lost so....

Firearms will be transported between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers and licensed collectors, as defined in the United States Gun Control Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-618, enacted October 22, 1968), as amended by the Firearms Owners' Protection Act (P.L. 99-308, approved May 19, 1986, and a subsequent amendment thereto, P.L. 99-360, approved July 8, 1986) ("the Acts"), law enforcement agencies of the United States or of any department or agency thereof, and law enforcement agencies of any State or any department, agency or political subdivision thereof, and between persons not otherwise prohibited from shipping firearms by federal, state or local law and when such shipment complies with all applicable federal, state and local laws. The shipper must affix a UPS label requesting an adult signature upon delivery to each package containing a firearm. Adult means a person 21 years of age or older. UPS, in its sole discretion, may require the shipper to select a UPS Next Day Air Service for any shipment containing a firearm. Handguns, as defined by the Acts, will only be accepted for transportation via UPS Next Day Air Services, but will not be accepted for transportation via UPS Drop Boxes, Internet Shipping, or in response to a request for On-Call Pickup Service. Firearms, including handguns, will not be accepted when presented for shipment at locations of The UPS Store® or any Third Party Retailer (as described in Item 1090). Small arms ammunition, as defined in 49 C.F.R. § 173.59, will be transported only when packaged and labeled in compliance with 49 C.F.R. § 172.

I did speak and even try to calmly argue that this couldn't be the case as Federal law says otherwise and federal law should override company policy, but I was also younger and less wise back then. Problem is, they saw my hunk of metal and polymer laying in front of them as hazardous material, and I really did not want to raise any unecessary alarms, or, for that matter, make them uncomfortable with having me in their store. I spoke with management, management called headquarters to verify policy in my situation, and I still got a "we're sorry but you can't ship here". Went to FedEx, they asked me what it was, I told him that it was a gun and I was shipping it back to the manufacturer for repairs, and he said "ok, let's see the money". It was a H&K USP 45 by itself, and I think I paid about $50 overnight w/ morning arrival (only option I was "allowed").

I priced a guy $40.00 to ship a handgun today and he acted like I was a thief. I told him it's been costing me $50.00 or so to ship a handgun, so for $40.00 I was eating part of the fee!

Forty-something a few months ago, for a 26 oz gun, insured for full value, UPS "next day saver" rate. Next time I'll have my dealer ship it.

Re--The real cost of shipping a hand gun.

Forty to Fifty bucks seems to be the range of prices coming up the most. My Brother paid just shy of Fifty to ship me a revolver about six months ago, he also paid a Twenty-five dollar fee to the FFL on his end. I paid a Thirty-five dollar fee to the FFL on my end so the total cost to ship was really $110.00. Some of you folks got off easy.

I tried to talk him into just holding it until my next visit but he’s in California and insisted it be on paper. By the time it arrived I felt like I suckered him, I only paid him $300 for it.
Mike
