Cougar sighting

Pullman WA - College town, home of WSU Cougars, in
the middle of dryland wheat country - although just 10
miles east in Idaho pines and forest begin to get more
abundant as you get into the Clearwater mtns. Yesterday,
a woman watched a young Cougar in her backyard located
on the west edge of town for 20 minutes. Before police arrived
responding to her phone call the big cat disappeared into a
wheat field towardsthe west. There's a couple of sightings
like this in the last few years.

Lots of cats in the SE part of the state . . . called a pair of young ones in last year not too awfully far from you while I was coyote hunting. THAT will get your attention . . . sneaky rascals.

Az Cats

It's happened to me twice in the last two years. Mtn Lions stalking myself and a buddy. Once when we were stopped on quads in the hills watching the AF bombing range at dusk.

Second time was while coyote hunting in the flats. That one got within ten feet till my hunting partner perforated him. Scared the heck outta me, I was watching for yotes the other direction!

Certainly looks like a mountain lion to me. We get sightings from time to time (including one by one of my neighbors a few years ago), but no definitive proof there's Puma in the area.

The massive sighings in the hundreds here in Pullman
is every APril for the last couple of decades. That's
when WSU has Mom's weekend for the 17,000+ student
body - makes em clean up there act for 72 hours at least

Have you heard about the new target range down in Lewiston ID ?
Diamond Shooters or something like that - it is the same setup
as SHarpshooters in SPokane. There's a company that sells the
'range' as an entire package. 25 yard range
diamond plate stalls with an overhead trolley for the
targets you can run them out to whatever range you
want up to 25 yards max. $15 for one time non-club
members. Club members no charge but $5 for guests
if they occupy your same stall

Seriously. Had it happen in Montana, also. Have also had black bear show up & 1 wolf WAY before they were reintroduced. The price you pay for sounding like an easy dinner . . .

Tag'd

Whenever we go hunting, as a rule we make sure we're in a position to kill a critter where necessary.

We had our lion tags so it was a non issue. But in Az. if one stalks you and attacks and you kill it, as long as you report it to Game and Fish your generally ok even without a tag. They won't let you keep it but you won't get in trouble.

A friend of mine in Escondido CA lives on a Cul de Sac near the
top of a hill. The backyear faces west and slopes down to brush
and no near neighbors in that direction Nice view of the commercial seciton of town. His SO lost her poodle Babs. He took the body to a vet
thought a coyote had gotten the poodle. The vet said no, looks like a
cat, a big cat got it About a week later he was going to work on his
motorcycle in the early AM before dawn. The next door driveway has
some vegatiation between them and he saw something slip into the
bushes - he paused and saw two golden cat eyes looking at him.
At work he called his S.O. and told her to stay inside and called Fish
& game. They said they were aware of it but only had a permit for
an area on the west side of town where a confirmed kill had taken place.

If he took care of it himself he has been silent about it. But he is quite capable of doing it quietly - ex-SOG Vietnam. We get together with our
motorcycling gropu at a campout every year one year some REMFs were
talking about what camo is the best. Mark didn't say anything until
he walked away and said the best camo is mujd. and I need a beer.

Only story he has ever told me about was
when he was the prey so to speak and
they, a 4 man team, were burning boot
trying to get to a spot for a helo extraction
and they lost a good man who fell into a
pond of water and mark went down to
get him - they got him out but CPR
had to be stopped for the ride up to the Helo.

As an ex-USN Sailor I always tremember
the line from Apocwhat was the line in Apocalypse
Now" Just stay on the boat.

There was a recent wolverine sighting by one of the local gun shop owners here a week or so back. I've seen 'em and my FIL has seen 'em, as have quite a few others, but they're still considered 'extinct'. (However, I've yet to see a cougar in the wild, and there's a season on them here.)

GFP and similar groups are very hesitant to acknowledge predatory species entering an area after reports of their existence because that means they're not doing their job and finding these animals, and it causes a public scare. That, and it means they'll likely have to figure out a hunting season for the animal within a couple years.

Same they assume Cougar was sighted again on TUesday in
the same area. The local animal control guy spent 90 minutes
looking for it it was reported on the local radio station.
The monring guys with local news have their radio station
within a couple of hundred yards of the sighting remarked
they have noticed a decline in the number of feral cats nearby
and the one they spotted as tehy got off work - mid-morning
seemed to be on Conditon One alert

A 12 year old boy somewhere in Western Candada was attacked
bittten and clawed but survived, the Cougar was shot and killed.
it was reported in national news this A.M .
