Could it be!?!?! A 9mm carbine that's actually worth our time?!?!

Anyone have the scuttlebutt on this thing? Id love to know if this thing is going to be available in the US or not.

Edit by ugaarguy: For those who don't like clicking links with no description or a vague description at best, the above will take you The Truth About Guns blog entry about the 9mm Saiga Carbine they viewed at the IWA show.

If they could make the safety/selector usable w/o removing a hand from the weapon, change the stock, make it 45acp and shorten the barrel, I'd be all over it. :)

Just think of the marketing slogan: "Size and weight of an AK, now with less power and more expensive ammo!"

Its neat, but there is zero point to a 9mm from a practical view, when 7.62 is .22 cents per round and 5.45 (for the recoil sensitive) is available for the same price as 9mm.

Homebuilders have been tinkering with 9mm (and 7.62x25) AKs for years new - cool to see a major concern address that market. I'd be interested to know if it's blowback or gas operated - the homemade ones I'm aware of were almost all blowback, as 9mm didn't give enough gas to run an AK rotating bolt reliably.

I've always kinda wanted a 9mm SBR, but none of the available options really jumped out at me (although a Hotchkiss Universal would be fantastic to have). One of these would get me pretty interested...

Bunch of negative Nancys in here... "That's not practical", "That's not logical". Some of us just love guns for the sake of having guns. I Love AK's...I think the platform is one of the best designs out there. I also shoot a ton of 9mm... I stock even more. And as far as ALL of the other available 9mm carbines out there, considering that horrible atrocity that Taurus put out. The ugly hunks of pot metal hi point makes (which actually aren't bad guns) the hugely overpriced Beretta storm, the ergonomically heinous UZI, and the all around POS MAC 10, and 11. What is out there for this type of gun that could match? The antiquated and sparsely available marlin camp nine? Nah.... This saiga 9 is going to be the knees of the bee.

While I think its cool, it is pretty pointless in an AK chassis. HOWEVER, if it is gas operated, I can see this being an excellent mate to a suppressor, especially if SBR'd. Just imagine this with a 8-10"bbl and a 6" suppressor..... Drools... Or as a pistol with the Sig brace. We dont gain much from a 16" barrel with 9mm anyway.

What do you mean pointless?

Pointless as in:
Its neat, but there is zero point to a 9mm from a practical view, when 7.62 is .22 cents per round and 5.45 (for the recoil sensitive) is available for the same price as 9mm.

However, like I said, I can see it being an amazing suppressed SBR if its gas op. I do like the fact that you could likely run the cheapest steel cased 9mm available, after all it is an AK and it is made for steel.

Its like the peanuts parents are typing right now. 9mm, despite being no so hard to find anymore, is still pretty economical. I mean were literally talking about the three cheapest types of ammo here. (milsurps excluded)......22 7.62 and 9.... all economical compared to their counterparts.

Looks like it could have some potential. But ever since I saw a post on here last year in which someone mentioned a CZ Evo 3, I've been drooling waiting for the day CZ can/does import a semi-auto version of it. If they'd build them over here that'd be even better. Probably wouldn't be cheap though, no matter where they build it. Their 805 Bren rifles seem like they'd be nice too.

jumbojimbo, tone it down. You opened the thread with "Could it be!?!?! A 9mm carbine that's actually worth our time?!?!". That's a very negative and dismissive view of every 9mm carbine that's already on the market. So don't get mad at and dismiss others who don't share your enthusiasm for a prototype the production version of which we may never see.

+1 with Ian for the Hotchkiss Universal as the ultimate 9 mm carbine! Nothing says: " Hey guys, look at me! " as a gun that folds up like a Transformer.

For me my all-time favorite 9mm. carbine would have to be the Sterling Mk. VI. Definitely a fun gun to shoot though it had a voracious appetite what with those 36 round mags to feed it with. I burned through a lot of WWB in an afternoon at the range with that gun.

Indeed, my most sincere apologies to those who may have been offended by my comments regarding other 9mm carbines.

And the HP995 is actually kinda purty in an ATI stock.
You're right Johnny Ive had three of them! All dressed up in ATI stocks that made them look like storms.(from what i saw about a year ago, ati isnt making those stocks anymore.) The one thing I didn't really like about them was taking them down... for that reason i neglected to clean any of them really. Which is very unusual for me. But that didnt stop them from running really well. Off my head I cant recall a time where one malfunctioned.

Hmmmm, love the AKS-74 stock. Love the rail, if they've gone to a hinged top cover like the -74U, which would keep it stable. Love the shortened action. Obviously the barrel length is just for US sales/import. Almost surprised the barrel doesn't already have a section threaded back by the gas block right aft of where you're supposed to cut it after you get your Form 1 back! :D

That could be a whole lot of fun. Considering that my AKS-74 is already lighter than most of the ARs I'm handed, this should be a right handy, nifty package!

Well, it will be a neat new toy for those who love AK-pattern rifles. However, several quality 9mm carbines have existed in the market for quite some time. I've personally owned a couple of Ruger PC9s, and I now have a CMMG 9mm AR. All have been extremely nice. I'm curious about this AK offering, especially to see if Saiga can offer it at a good price point. I'm betting it will be in the $700-$800 range and that limited supply will keep prices up.

Hm, I'm not familiar with the PC9, but I do love Ruger Firearms.

Also, I'm confident that if there's a significant demand for these carbines in the US, The ruskies will indeed keep up. Its what they do.

PS... I love the look of the pc9, kinda looks like a beefy 10/22... Im interested. Gunbrokers prices seem sky high though. Im thinking Ruger didn't make too many of these eh?

A "beefed-up 10/22" is a good description for the PC9. Ruger made them for a while (maybe 8-10 years?), but they've been discontinued for several years now. I'm not sure what they fetch now, but I sold mine last year for almost what my 9mm AR cost brand-new. In any event, the PC9 is a solid little gun. Knocks against it are that's it's heavy for its size and its trigger is too heavy. Both are valid criticisms to a degree, but neither is a deal-killer. I went the AR route because of the ergos. I expect those who enjoy the feel of the AK will similarly gravitate to the Saiga 9mm.
