Well, it turns out that all chain stores in the area have stopped carrying the Rem 700 VS I've been searching for, they've even gone so far as to remove them from their special order books. And none of the local gun & pawn shops (why are there so many of those around a US Army Fort?) have one in stock.

So, admitting I wont be able to get a great deal at a chain store or find one in stock at a pawn shop, I ordered a new Remington 700 P in .308 and am having it transfered to one of the shops.

$700 out the door after transfer (might be $735 if the dealer charges me tax, dont know if he will or not yet), it should be here sometime next week as the shop has to send their FFL to the distributor but I prepaid with my credit card . :D

Well still, congrats!

I'm sure you're gonna love the 700P/PSS just as much. Plus I gotta say I'm jealous of the price you got for it. Here in California the cheapest I found a PSS was for $729. After tax and dros it comes out to mid $800's!

What type of glass are you planning to put on the rifle?

I really was in the market for either, depending on what was in stock and the prices, but since I had to order anyway, I just threw in the extra $40 for the P over the VS. The VS used to be available for $600+tax at many larger sporting goods stores, but none around here had seen one in over a year.

A dealer on GunsAmerica currently has the P's on sale for $639+18s/h, thus the low price.

Goal for optics is a Leupold VX-III or a Mk4, but that will have to wait until December/January when end of the year bonuses and a promotion should be handed out. (preban AR goodies are a higher priority at the moment and I'm already blowing a lot more than I intended on stuff) Until then, I have a spare Bushnell 3-9x32 Sportview to put on it to get me through hunting season.
