I must confess, I had a moment of weakness...

...when I saw this practically unfired Marlin 1895CB with the 26” octagon barrel in the rack at a pawn shop. <sigh>

I was in the area of one of our outlying offices and after googling “gun shops” I checked the phone map. One was pinned about a mile from the office, so I stopped in to a local pawn shop to kill some time before a meeting.

The store had a decent selection of long arms for a pawn shop and after checking out the limited handgun and .22 sections I spied this gem sitting between a Henry .45/70 and a nice stainless guide gun. When I asked to see it it looked really clean, with a solid action feel, no visible bluing wear or wood dings and perfectly straight buckhorn/gold bead sights. Once I saw the magical JM on the barrel I decided that the .327 Federal Ruger GP I’ve been wanting could wait... again.

The hang tag said $700, and I told the guy behind the counter if he could do $600 out the door I’ll buy it right now. Taking away the 9+% sales tax and $35.00 State DROS fee I got it for a bit over $500.00.

There is a small 1” scratch on the left side of the receiver and a touch of bluing wear on the open lever where it rubs the hangar at the bottom of the receiver. Other than that, spotless. When cleaning it at home it had almost no carbon in the barrel or action, so I’ll guess... maaaaybe... it fired five shots... and if the former owner said there were only two shots that went down the barrel I wouldn’t be surprised.

I wasn’t in the market for a companion to my .45/70 guide gun... heck, for that matter I wasn’t looking for another rifle at all. But when it hits, it hits. Forgive me, oh bank account, I’m a sinner.

Confession over, stay safe.

In a heartbeat! As an Ohio guy....deer cartridge restrictions and all....a JM Marlin in that configuration would be very high on the list for me. I’m a huge lever gun fan and a huge JM Marlin fan. I have two in .30-30 (not with that beautiful octagon barrel though).

Nice score.

I got my JM 1895CB from my usual gun shop. As I was perusing a guy came in with it. Unfired and essentially NIB with tags still attached. The guy just wanted to sell it.

The owner knew he would be selling it to me as soon as he bought it from this guy so he made a better offer than average to the guy who agreed.

The owner then offered it to me for $650 out the door. Sold.

Out of curiosity is the stainless Guide Gun JM and how much do they want for it? If it is around the same price as the CB you may want to take interest in that too.

Nice score! ... and thanks for the pics.

I have been hoping for such an 1894CB moment for a long time. :)

I have a pair of 1983-mfd Marlin 1894Ss (.44mag), one purchased in the late '80s and the "accidental" unfired 1894S acquisition just a few years ago.

The one that I have been shooting for 30 years is very accurate (first thing that I bought after the first 1894S was a William 5D rear aperture sight ;)).

Oh yeah, that wouldn't last long around here. Probably would go for a bit more too. I passed on a number of great Marlin 45-70's before they allowed cartridges thinking they'd stay that cheap and I'd grab one later.

... NOPE!

At least I picked up my Rossi 92 44, the day before the ODNR announced it'd be deer legal.

I didn’t ask about the stainless GG at the time, but I did call up there yesterday for one of my lever gun-addict co-workers who is pining for a .45/70. The clerk said $700, but I’m sure they’ll deal down like they did for me when I went in.

I have the blued/ported GG in the safe, and if I hadn’t already high-bidded on a 20 ga BPS (the yet-to-be-admitted others half of my confession :D) I may have bought it, too.

Stay safe.

You lefty? You like all the same kinds of guns I do. I also have a 20ga BPS.
No, I’m a righty who surfs/skated goofy foot, my Dad was a lefty so I get that from him.

I bought a 28 ga BPS a couple of years ago and followed it up with a 16 gauge BPS from one of our THR members earlier this year. I really like the guns, a touch heavy but very well made!

I’m getting this one for my son. It is in great shape and has the 22” invector barrel, so I’ll get the stock shortened a bit and he can cut his teeth on it when he gets a bit bigger. (Plus at $325.00 I couldn’t say no. I admitted I’m weak when a bargain pops up!)

Stay safe.

I am right handed and goofy footed to my dad is a lefty aswell. Sometime I do things left handed i don't even notice, fish left handed to. I would enjoin a Browning bps if I could find one around here.

No crap. Mine is a youth model with the 22" Invector barrel. I put a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad to increase the LOP.

Hey, I could trade you stocks whenever you get the BPS. PM sent.

oh one thing if you put a peep sight on it and wear glasses be careful I scratched my lense good with the recoil on my 1886
Indeed! I have some “stouties” loaded up with the Rem 405 gr JSP and a Ruger-ready dose of 3031 that I’ve shot numerous times through the guide gun. Since this rifle has only a hard buttplate those may be avoided to limit shoulder-abuse.

I did get to load some of the ACME 450 gr coated bullets a few weeks back, I think those will be shot first after I get the peep in stalled.

Stay safe.
