...when I saw this practically unfired Marlin 1895CB with the 26” octagon barrel in the rack at a pawn shop. <sigh>
I was in the area of one of our outlying offices and after googling “gun shops” I checked the phone map. One was pinned about a mile from the office, so I stopped in to a local pawn shop to kill some time before a meeting.
The store had a decent selection of long arms for a pawn shop and after checking out the limited handgun and .22 sections I spied this gem sitting between a Henry .45/70 and a nice stainless guide gun. When I asked to see it it looked really clean, with a solid action feel, no visible bluing wear or wood dings and perfectly straight buckhorn/gold bead sights. Once I saw the magical JM on the barrel I decided that the .327 Federal Ruger GP I’ve been wanting could wait... again.
The hang tag said $700, and I told the guy behind the counter if he could do $600 out the door I’ll buy it right now. Taking away the 9+% sales tax and $35.00 State DROS fee I got it for a bit over $500.00.
There is a small 1” scratch on the left side of the receiver and a touch of bluing wear on the open lever where it rubs the hangar at the bottom of the receiver. Other than that, spotless. When cleaning it at home it had almost no carbon in the barrel or action, so I’ll guess... maaaaybe... it fired five shots... and if the former owner said there were only two shots that went down the barrel I wouldn’t be surprised.
I wasn’t in the market for a companion to my .45/70 guide gun... heck, for that matter I wasn’t looking for another rifle at all. But when it hits, it hits. Forgive me, oh bank account, I’m a sinner.
Confession over, stay safe.
