In my neighborhood there are all kinds of critters including coyote, fox, hogs, bobcat, and a young mountain lion. I found this pile at the edge of my driveway but am uncertain. It looks like coyote pooh with small hairs and seeds, but it's orange. They are the size of large grapes.

Coyote pooh?

Whatever it is, it's been eating persimmons.

Hard to determine size from this photo but coons, possums, and coyotes all eat persimmons.

Possibly coon. Coons love persimmons, around here they have just now started really falling off the tree.

Coyotes really love little old ladies, you can tell by all the blue hairs in the scat.

A few years ago my wild plums had a remarkably good crop. Something like this was the result only more purpley. Due to the size of the scat, its number and proximity to the house, we blamed it on foxes, who were pretty numerous that fall and winter.

TinyPic doesn't offer sizes, however I'd think a pic with plent of detail would be a good thing.

What is the consensus here? I thought it looked like coyote, but it seems to differ from most of the pics I saw in the link.

I've seen a lot of coyote scat in the Terlingua area desert, but it was usually black and not in small clots like that. Mostly, sorta long and narrow segments, maybe 3" x maybe 3/4"--not that I used a ruler. :D Foxes, similar, but not so much black and a tad smaller.

Wouldn't fruit in it rule out cats?

Can't say I've ever seen possum pooh and I'm certain we have them.

I've seen this same type but not orange. Darker without seeds but plenty of hair. Always thought it coyote.

Fruit definitely would not rule out feline. I have had 2 cats that absolutely loved and would beg crying for Cantaloupe. They would lead you to the closed refrigerator as though they knew it was in there. And would defend it with yowling and hissing while gulping it down. Didn't even react to Catnip like that.

After looking at the picture again. It looks like something that did not digest or was thrown up. Is there a fruit that looks like this in the area?

I'm not aware of anything that looks similar. It could easily have come from garbage as my neighbor seems to deposit food stuff in a pile near his house.

The shape and size is familiar enough to me. I've seen it elsewhere many times, though it's generally much darker and lacking seeds but typically has hair in it.

I'm not sure about my location here, but there are ringtail cats in TX. I'd think that would be rather large for them as they are the size of a very large squirrel.

As mentioned before, they are most likely persimmon seeds. There are gobs of them all over eastern Texas. They are scrubby little trees that grow to about 20-30 feet and produce lots of ORANGE-colored fruit this time of year.

I'm certainly not saying these cannot be persimmons, though the seeds are nowhere near that large, more like an elongated mustard seed. I was asked if there were any other fruits nearby and thought of the neighbor's pile of refuse.

I beg to differ. Mustard seeds are tiny.

My money says these are persimmon seeds that have been processed by a coon.

I have 5 persimmon trees within 100 yards of my back door....and have killed 9 coons so far this year.
