Coyote Shotgun and ammo?

I would think some type of magnum turkey round that patterns tight out of the gun being used. Why not use a rifle?

I get not wanting exit wounds, but wouldn't five to seven 00 pellets ruin the pelt just as much? Where does one shoot the Coyote with a shotgun?

I'm actually sitting in a ladder stand coyote hunting as I type. I'm using a Rem 1100 w/ a 30" full choke and 3" #4 buck.

I'm going to start my caller at 5. I'll let you know how it goes if I see one.

Edit: no dogs, but I did have a flock of turkeys a might confused. I think they wanted to roost in the big trees near where I was hunting but didn't like the coyote howls and wimpers I was calling with.

You ever looking out calling yotes and one shows up behind you is y you want the shotgun.

I usually run a Benelli Supernova with an 18.5" Carlson's barrel and a Patternmaster choke, Burris FastFire III on a Speedbead mount. Hillbilly style DIY formed foam rubber cheek riser under an Allen cartridge loop stock wrap, DIY bipod mount adapter with a Harris knock off to keep it out of the snow and grass. Usually I feed it Federal Power Shok #4buck, but have taken literally hundreds of coyotes over the years with Winchester Super X 00 Buck.

#4 buck is probably the most popular and it’s what I like best. Dead Coyote shooting T shot are also popular but expensive. Some guys use BB and some use 00buck.

In the body. A 12 gauge with a decent patterning load and #4 buck is hell on coyotes inside 40 yards.

Shotgun is easy on pelts

I can tell ya what NOT to use. I was late season hunting doves on one of my leases one season and leaning against a tree. I turned around to look behind me and a yote was trotting straight toward me at about 25 yards. I wheeled around and the yote started to my left. I floored him with a hit in his upper body using a dove load from my Winchester 1400 12 gauge. Knocked him down, he struggled to his feet and ran off.

So, I can say for sure #7,5 dove loads don't work. All in all, I'd use my M4. It's quite accurate and .223 is appropriate for such critters.

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I currently use a full-choked 30" barreled Remington 870 Wingmaster for turkeys. Has been very good for turkeys with magnum 5s, including one I killed out to about 40 yds. Last year a coyote responded to my turkey call, trotting about 50 yds out; a bit too far in my judgment. But still, I have no doubt I can kill a coyote with it and the right loads. I also have a Benelli semi-auto which would shoot 3" mags and might be the better choice for coyotes. At least until I get around to buying a dedicated coyote shotgun. ( My Benelli is a fancy shiny one that I don't want to damage in the field.) So you have given my some good ideas. Thanks again.

My favorite 12 gauge shotgun load is Winchester XX Magnum #4 copper plated shot out of a full choke barrel. It will kill a turkey at 50 yards and works great on coyotes at closer ranges. I like a one shot kill on the spot but with a pump shotgun it's not a problem to hit with a second shot. I also use an 870 Remington.

I' m using a 3" winchester model 12, with Briley chokes with Dea Coyote, T shot, biggest shot legal in TN........ yes they are expensive .

Benelli Nova 12 gauge
28” barrel
Carlson’s Full Choke
Heavy Shot Dead Coyote, Hypersonic T-shot, #4 Buck. All equals dead dogs.

I shoot steel Ts on geese, will shoot right through a goose and leave an exit wound out to 40 yards. I have a 10 gauge H&R I hunt geese with. It holds 85 pellets or something. It patterns better than my 12 gauge 3.5" Mossberg 535 and kicks one HELL of a lot less. That Mossberg will loosen your fillings. I can only imagine how well lead Ts would do even on a song dog. It's some wicked stuff even in steel.
