I've found something neat reading through my reloading manuals (Nosler, Barnes, & Lyman), there is a round that can do just what you want: 300 H&H Magnum. It'll shoot anything from 125gr to 220gr bullets.

If i were a one gun man that gun would be a nice .270 Winchester with a 26" barrel.

.30-06 all the way. about the most available ammo for large rifles out there and can do anything you need. african game specialists used them to control a hippo population some years back with tremendous effect. WOULD i use it to take down big bears or african game....not a chance! CAN it do it? of course...it has. but none of these are coyote to moose...their days are numbered against a hunter wielding a .30-06.
while the surplus ammo out there leans to the .308 win, there is PLENTY of surplus -06. you can also find it anywhere. also, if you lose your weapon when the zombies hit and have 2000 rounds of ammo, what are you more likely to find lying around in a farmhouse you take shelter in? gotta be an old -06.

Today's 180-grain bullets seem to penetrate as well as yesterday's 220s. Odds are that the old '06 would kill more meese than the average fella could eat.

30-06 with 165 gr bullets for everything...inc coyote. With one bullet you dont have to resight or worry about 'where will this bullet hit'??
For those that think that 165 is too light for moose-not so. Just shoot a couple boxes of ammo/yr and your bullet placement will be better than 2 or 3 ROUNDS that kick the hexx out of you (300 Mag) and you hope you never have to shoot--yuk.
