Hold on to your hats fellow Hoosiers. My wife applied for a renewal on her Indiana License to Carry a Handgun (renewing from 4 yr to lifetime). She applied on Friday August 16. Received it Thursday August 22! They're posting 20 weeks!

At State Police HQ the lady said "Woah...you've got a level 4 security clearance! I guess you won't be playing the waiting game." Sure enough!

So here's proof what's going on in chronically understaffed Indiana government...it's the background check that's taking all the time...not the paperwork.

PS. To offset the chronic understaffing of the government, we citizens are "chronically under-taxed" as well.

Congrats, sounds great.

My NJ handgun purchase permit is available this morning. 2 months and 2 weeks since I applied for it (3 months and a week if you count that when I made an appointment for the fingerprinting, the first available slot was 3 weeks away, and include that in the application process time).

But the real question is, why does her security clearance make her better than the upright and honest citizen?

One possible response is that they don't determine honesty with a background check, and that they don't find a citizen to be upright until they run the background check.

I don't agree with carry licenses at all, but that ^ is going to be the answer to your question.

xfyrfiter But the real question is, why does her security clearance make her better than the upright and honest citizen?

It doesn"t. But I would imagine a Level 4 Security Clearance background check is much more extensive than a background check for a CCL. They probably figured it would be a waste of time and money to do another background check.

Imagine that, government employees using common sense.
