In NH we have had a couple of bills introduced this legislative session that, if passed, will repeal the requirement for a license to conceal carry a handgun in NH, and will in effect bring about constitutional carry to the state. One of these bills has already overwhelmingly passed the state house and is on the way to the senate.

There is a public hearing before the Senate committee tomorrow on the bill before it hits the floor. Public citizens can speak before the committee and advocate for or against the bill, anyone who wants to can have their say before the committee. The committee then makes a determination if they will support the bill or not (a bill will be voted on either way, but the floor usually follows the recommendation of the committee).

What I wanted to know is if there has been any crime statistics for the states that have already passed the constitutional carry legislation, Arizona and Alaska? IE, has crime gone down since the introduction of the bills, gone up, or stayed the same? If there is evidence that crime has dropped in either state, or at least has not increased, it would really help give us some ammunition here in NH who want to pass this bill.

Would anyone happen to have any information in regards to this? Thank you.

Stats for AZ won't be available for quite some time but stats for AK should be up and running. Anybody from AK that can point us in the right direction?

Can't wait for the bill to be passed, would allow me to finally start conceal carrying thanks to my local Police Chief not liking those under 21 with a CCW permit.

There is not substantiable correllation between concealed carry or open carry and crime rates. The factors regarding crime rates are much more complex. The notion of more guns equalling less crime is a farce.

With concealed carry in Texas and Florida, it was noted that crime went down after it went into effect. It did. In fact, the laws were magical, causing crime to drop in the years preceding the the laws going into effect and even causing crime to drop in parts of the country where concealed carry wasn't even legal, often thousands of miles distant. In Florida, the second year after concealed carry went into effect say a dramatic increase in the crime rate. So the reported success was strangely short.

The only place where such improvements can be said to be made with any conviction is at the individual level. The presence of a gun may very well be what is needed to save your life, but just because you have a gun doesn't mean all of the criminals are going to turn honest and if somebody does try to rob or harm you and you do protect yourself with a gun, a crime or crimes have still occurred and so become part of the crime rate statistics.
