Assuming S.1805 passes its final vote today, it will be sent to the House. Because the Senate bill is significantly different that the one the House passed, there will be a joint conference committee. In this committee, the House has the advantage over the Senate in crafting legislation.

Nothing can be added in this committee that isn't already in either bill; but things can be removed.

Once the bill is reported out of committee, the new version of the bill decided on by the joint conference committee must be passed by a floor vote in both the House and Senate. This is a straight up/down vote for the conference bill with no amendments allowed.

So, we still have three more chances to kill this bill and any attached amendments and at least one more chance to get a clean version with no amendments passed - so don't give up the ship just yet!

Start calling your representatives and make it clear to them that the only acceptable bill out of the Senate-House committee is a CLEAN bill.

Final vote on S.1805 at/after 2:15ET.

Passed so far:

10 year AWB extention, Background checks on private sales at gun shows, National CCW for cops only.

------------
I am not confident of the final bill out of conference and GWB said he would sign an AWB renewal.

We're toast. Tactical black toast.

We're toast. Tactical black toast.

O come on... we lost the first round in the Senate - a round that the antis fully expected to win - by less than a handful of votes.

We still have a chance to get a clean bill and we have two more opportunities to kill this bill if the conference committee can't clean it up.

It is way, way early to give up now.

It will all pass and Bush will sign it. There is too much cover in the bill for Republicans, they can say they are pro gun (liability bill) Pro cop and homeland security, the Demos get registration of private sales and no assault weapons. What's not to like?

Hastert who was equivocating before hand will come out for the bill and I believe that Delay will fold also due to the pro law enforcement and pro business aspects of the bill. Game over.

Bush gets to protect big business which is way more important than peon's rights and has already said he will sign the assault weapons ban anyway.

I am done with the NRA too. They had only 10 years, TEN FREAKING years to get ready for this. If there is going to be a fight over citizen's rights to keep and bear arms (and there will be, just replay the speeches of Kennedy et al and look at the entire REST OF THE WORLD...canada, australia, UK, etc.....) let it be sooner rather than later, delay is not our friend.

Um these votes were close, VERY close.

Go cry now that we didn't get blown out.

the NRA lost control of this. No way should anyone vote yes on final passage and for a gun ban. No way. I'm calling Sen Craig and telling him to pull this bill. It is an embarassment!

Is the extension the exact same as before? An expanded version? Or the one that has the restrictions on mags taken out?

I'm just wondering if this does pass, if things will "stay the same" and things like SKS's, bushmasters, etc.. can still be gotten, just now at a MUCH higher price?

This is a sad day. Hopefully this thing gets killed or the House cleans it up.

I know Tom DeLay. He orchestrated most of the Legislative action that was taken in Texas in our last session. The key piece of legislation was...Tort Reform. He has a H**d On for tort reform and if it comes down to getting it or not....he will get tort reform and you and I will get background checks and ten round magazines.

That's just a fact. I hope I am wrong but doubt it. The best indication of what the future might be is the past.

i posted the text of the AWB extension and the Gunshow admendment in the Legal and Political forum

KnoxWasRight - Neal Knox disagrees with you on that point, so looks like a new name is in order.

The bill still has not passed a final vote in the Senate - you have about one more hour before the voting resumes to make your feelings known. The amendments have been attached in the Senate - the only place to change that now is in conference committee.

The extension is the exact same as before, right down to the 10-year sunset provision.

The house can strip the amendments again clean off, correct? Then send the original bill back to the Senate...

Yes, it can. The bill would then go for a straight up/down, no amendments allowed vote in both houses. Since the clean bill had 54 co-sponsors, it will pass the Senate if the amendments are stripped out.

This proves that the NRA is useless.

If this passes and Bush signs it, I will actively campaign against his reelection.

Yes, Kerry is a SOS, but at least I know where he stands on the issues.

I can't say that for George W. Bush.

FWIW, I spoke to the office help for both my Senators, Shelby and Sessions. Sessions will vote Aye for final passage, and the flunky for Shelby said "He will vote for the clean bill". I pointed out that the amendments had been agreed to, so the previous stance was null and void, and asked for clarification. None was forthcoming. I took that to mean he'll vote for passage. We're fornicated, at least for now.:banghead:

No.

Constitutionally.

The NRA needs to come out and tell the Federal Government that we won't abide by these laws. I don't believe in what the gays are doing in San Fran, but we should be able to do the same kind of thing, and stand behind the Constitution.

How many times can the same bill go back and forth between the two houses?

Well, the House passes a bill (HR 1036 in this case)- then the Senate passes a bill (probably S.1805 here), then the conference committee agrees on one version of the bill (if they don't already match), then back to the House or Senate for a straight up or down vote in each house.

If the bill is voted down in either house, then it has to be revived as a new bill, reintroduced and the whole process is started all over again from the beginning.
