I just purchased Suter's Choice Cast bullets, Diameter of .401 - 180 grain Lead Round Nose Flat Point. I loaded up about 25 rounds last night and noticed these have a crimp grove, I am loading these for my .40 S&W.

My understanding is that Automatic pistol cartridges use a taper crimp, my RCBS dies do this, and that Revolvers us a role crimp, I don't have .40 dies that do this.

Should I put a heavy taper crimp on these bullets or just crimp as usual? My concern is that if I crimp as normal, simply remove the bell, it won't hold the OAL.

Taper Crimp as usual.

The bullets you bought are intended for the 38-40 WCF revolver cartridge, so do have a roll crimp groove.
But you can't use it with auto pistol cartridges because they headspace on the case mouth.

Case neck tension and normal taper crimp should hold them in place.

You should taper crimp the .40 S&W to about .421" for proper headspacing.
In any case, it must be no more then .423" MAX dia. for proper chambering.

rcmodel, sorry if I misunderstood you...

Yes go ahead and load/taper as usual there should be enough case neck tension to prevent setback:)

or

no you can't use this style of bullet for an auto pistol because you cannot headspace on the case mouth (due to crimp groove):(

A. Taper crimp as usual, because you should have enough neck tension, and the case headspaces on the mouth.
