Is there any reason that a strong-side pancake holster could not be worn as a cross draw holster? Is there any practical reason not to do so?

Also, are Bianchi and Galco holsters any good?

When Roy Baker came out with the first pancake holsters they were designed so they could be worn either strong side or off side cross draw style. There were 3 slots in his holsters, 1 to the rear of the gun and 2 in front of the gun. The cross draw style carried straight up and high. Whether other make that copy Roy's style can be worn comfortably cross draw will depend where they put the belt cuts.
Bianchi and Galco both make very nice holsters.

The main problem I see is cant.

All my strong side rigs have some cant and I like a generous cant too. If one of those was used weak side for cross-draw then gun grips would face to rear, making a very awkward draw IMO.

A paddle type with adjustable cant tho - would I reckon work just fine. I like cross draw and always have but downside is that this is usually frowned on at ranges and competitions in particular. So I stick to conventional as I want to be practiced only with what I use all the time.

I find the three slot holsters are terrible at crossdraw when the primary carry they were made for is strong side canted.

All that extra leather over the belt is unnecessary.

If you want crossdraw, buy crossdraw, not some halfbreed holster made with an extra slot option for that type of carry as an after thought.

I have one presently on order [ crossdraw ] for my SA LW Champion at

I misplaced my crossdraw Milt Sparks 55bn I've had for almost 20 years so I order one from Garrity as the wait is not 20 weeks+ from Milts shop presently to replace it.

The 55bn is one of the best cressdraw rigs ever, the Garrity is this one, loks to be superb as well and I'll have it hear shortly.

cross draw rigs...

I carry my duty weapon in a crossdraw sometimes. It's easy to move around with and is a comfort issue when seated a lot. I've heard some firearm experts support crawdraws for concealed carry because you do not "telegraph" your movement as much as a strong side or hip holster.

As far as brands I like the Milt Sparks BN-55 crossdraw or the Bianchi 111 crossdraw models. Most high quality holster shops make a few crossdraw holster for field use/concealed carry.

I've never carried crossdraw.

I've always carried strong side, so I can't help you on the first item. As far as Galco holsters, I can tell you from personal experience that they are good holsters. I currently carry in a Galco Concealable with a Galco single mag pouch and flashlight holster. Good stuff. HOWEVER - They are not custom made stuff. If you get a holster handmade to order you'll do two things. 1) Wait a while for it and 2) Get a very fine holster for not much more money. The real advantage of buying off the shelf stuff is availability.

1911 Guy makes some very good points about avilability. I personally dont feel comfy with crossdraw due to the fact I am sporting a little extra padding right now. However if you can do it and feel comfy dont let anyone discourage you.

Though I do recommend nicer leather than Galco. Something custom will work and fit better.
