Crossing state lines with a firearm?

Got a question.

Would it be illegal to, lets say, come from Maryland into Virginia, legally buy a handgun from a licensed gun store inside Virginia, and take it home? Or is this illegal? Any help is appreciated.

You will have to make arrangements with the gun store in Virginia to ship that handgun to an FFL in Maryland, so that all appropriate background checks are done at the state level there.

You can only buy a handgun in your state of residence (other than a couple of minor exceptions).

Capital Punishment,

A firearm may be transported from any legal location to any other legal location. If it's legal where you are at and where you are going, everything is fine. You need to abide by the different jurisdiction's method of storing it during travel. Check Packing.org for specifics.

You may buy rifles and shotguns from a licensed dealer in another state. You may not buy them from private individuals.

You can buy from an individual in another state. However, you cannot take possession of it in either the sellers state or yours. The seller must go to a local FFL and ask for it to be transferred to an FFL of your choice in your state. Once the FFL in your state gets it, he will do all it takes to comply with both state and federal laws, including waiting periods and background checks.

There's no problem with this as far as federal laws. It's ok in most states. Dunno about California, though.

Many area residents make occasional pilgrimages to Camp Perry in Ohio to see what rifles are available. They usually drive back to their home states with the trunk riding a little bit lower ...

The purchase must be legal both in state of residence and state of purchase. California residents cannot purchase out of state since California law requires that the purchase go through the DROS transaction.

As far as the CMP store at Camp Perry goes, the rules are different. The CMP is exempt from the Gun Control Act of 1968. (They don't even have an FFL.)
