Purchased on Gunbroker a nice 870 Wingmaster with a cruddy stock surplused by the California Highway Patrol.

I stripped, sanded and Tru-oiled the stock.

A vintage Jostam Hy-Gun recoil pad was found on gun-shy ebay.

Pad was fitted and checkering was cut by Frank Vallone at Sycamore Hill Designs.

It's just a home defense riot gun, but hey, no law says it has to be ugly.

Looks great. The wood to metal fit looks good too. I sanded a little too much on my first stock refinish and the fit isn't that great. It was still a major improvement. Tru-oil is great and easy to do.

Beautiful job. How much was the checkering if you don't mind? I'm about to receive a plain set of wood for my beretta O/U and am checking out some checkering joints.

That stock restoration looks first rate. For many years I was issued one of those old Remingtons. Most looked just like the one you purchased, some looked worse. All had one feature in common - they were utterly reliable... We had a mix of Mossbergs and Remingtons, I always preferred the Remington. With only a bead on the front and a groove in the receiver they were perfect for patrol work. The only advice I ever gave a young officer about using one was always aim just a bit low...

I sanded the butt end of the stock with the old pad left on. Left a nice fit but i did not like the look of the factory black ventilated pad. I was real careful sanding where the head meets the receiver.

Tru-oil is great and easy to do.

I dilute the stuff from the bottle 50/50 with mineral spirits.
Goes on much smoother and dries faster.

Here is the almost done refinished pump handle:
