One year after DC-area sniper attacks, presidential candidates co-sponsor H.R. 2038 to renew and strengthen assault weapon ban

Washington, DC - Congressmen Richard Gephardt (D-MO) and Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) have co-sponsored H.R. 2038, a bill that will renew and strengthen the federal assault weapons ban. Their support comes one year after the DC-area sniper attacks, which killed 10 and wounded three others. The legislation would stop the gun industry from manufacturing and marketing all assault weapons, including the snipers' Bushmaster XM15 assault rifle.

Though other presidential candidates have stated their support for a strengthened assault weapons ban, Reps. Gephardt and Kucinich are the only two to co-sponsor such legislation. The current ban is set to expire September 13, 2004 unless President Bush and Congress act.

"Congressmen Gephardt and Kucinich are leaders in the fight to rid America's streets of military-style assault weapons once and for all," said Joshua Horwitz, Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. "We hope that other candidates will follow suit and co-sponsor tough and effective assault weapons ban legislation."

Why the Ban Needs To Be Strengthened
The 1994 ban outlaws specific models of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons. But in a willful attempt to violate the spirit of the law, the gun industry continues to manufacture "post-ban" assault weapons - guns identical to those banned except for minor cosmetic changes. The Bushmaster XM15 used in last fall's sniper attacks, for example, is a "post-ban" version of the AR15 assault rifle, which is banned under current law.

H.R. 2038 and S. 1431, its Senate companion, will not only renew the ban, but also stop the gun industry from manufacturing "post-ban" assault weapons such as the Bushmaster XM15.

:barf:

Using the sniper shooting to justify the assault weapons ban is again evidence that they either dont know what the hell they're talking about, or they do know but they're willing to lie and decieve to ban anything they can.

That bushmaster might as well have been a bolt action .223. My .30-06 hunting rifle would have done more damage. OMG lets ban hunting rifles! Think of the children!

Dennis Kook-sinich...

A real stain in the shorts of Politics. Makes me ashamed to say I am from Ohio...but at least he is NOT my US Rep

You mean your TELESCOPE SIGHTED SNIPER RIFLE?

Anyway, I saw Kucinich mouthing off one evening on the news. I didn't recognize him, but I thought - I really did - he was the candidate for the Communist or Socialist Workers party. Talk about extreme!

Then I found out he was a Democrat - and an incumbent no less! :what:

Look, I relish disagreement and debate - it helps refine opinion and policy. I even respect some people whose opinions and viewpoints differ substantially from my own. But when Americans actually elect extremist kooks like this - kooks who don't seem to have the SLIGHTEST idea of what America is - it disturbs me.

For the Love of Pete, I thought Gephardt was a "moderate" who knows how to "work within the system"? Kucinich, now I knew he was nuts.

Kick them, and all the career politicians (R or D) out.

Isn't there some way we citizens can bypass these clowns and vote in term limits?:cuss:

How did they get it done in the 1930s/40s with the office of President?

Gephardt is one the most disgusting SOBs in government. When he has a big audience he goes out of his way to seem 'moderate' but when he's preaching to his chior the hate and extreme stupidity come out.

IMHO there is not an iota of difference between Gepbhardt and any other liberal bleeding heart, except that he is in a position to do iuntold damage to the RKBA cause. He, like every other Democrat depends on the votes of the left wing liberals for his livelihood. ( POLITICS ) No matter how moderate he sounds in a closed encounter, when it comes time to act, rest assured he will toe the liberal line. He is not our friend
