I'd like to make one peripheral point, before we get too far into today's litany of all the things wrong with the UK: The guys that I've met from the UK were some genuinely tough SOB's. Whatever the legal and societal situation may be WRT guns there, the Brits I've met weren't the least bit afraid to use their fists. Recreationally beating the mess out of each other still exists there in a way it hasn't in the US for a long while. You may now return to your regularly scheduled complaining about the UK.

Yeah, I've heard exactly the same thing from folks I know over there. People like to get REALLY blotto and they like to beat on each other. Not that we don't have bums and drunks fighting each other here, but I've walked around the roughest parts of the town confident nobody was going to lay hand on a sober man. And they never have. There's a line folks know they'd better not cross or they risk getting shot down. That line does not exist in the UK anymore, so the bullies run rampant. I've even seen reports of them picking on COPS and beating them up, which would get you so dead here it isn't even funny.

Nope, everything is the US's fault. Until we bow down and agree to live the lifestyle of the other countries it will continue to be that way. Its ok though, Barry is gonna take us down the right path, no need to worry.

As another poster noted, even "those violent militarized American police" don't even patrol with SMGs. They do have patrol rifles in vehicles, but you'd be hard pressed to see an officer walking a beat or doing a traffic stop with a slung long gun. The UK has us beat on that one.

Blaming the US style gang culture is the medias way of portraying guns as horrible dangerous things. The London Metropolitan police have set up Operation Trident in a effort to stop black on black killings, there is no white equivelent. This isn't a race things, its a fact thing.
The fact that the Labour party banned the law abiding from owning handguns has not stopped the illegal element of society.
Drug and territory wars are a daily occurance in some areas of the citys, and its not by the law abiding gun owners.

Its handguns less than 24" in total length and semi auto rifles other than .22lr that are banned here.

I think the British (and everyone else) should pay close attention to the history of their Home Guard / Local Defense Volunteers. First, because it shows how vulnerable a nation will feel if they are disarmed and threatened from abroad; second, because it shows how difficult it is to convert even a heavily industrialized nation to firearms production when all the big factories are making destroyers, planes, artillery, and tanks, and third, because it shows the kinds of weapons people can create without factories if they really need to.

we have always had a reputation for drunken violence. That was one of the reasons my battalion was'nt keen on the lads learning martial arts they'd really be able to do some damage on a saturday night
Unfortunatly lot of the wannabe gangsters wear hip hop style clothes and talk like they are extra's on the wire
fortunatly in my neck of the woods it was a dozen kids with airsoft guns who hav'nt caused anymore trouble since meeting MR armed response unfortunatly in certain parts of the uk these idiots can be used as runners in the drug scene hence more cash real guns. They think grand theft auto is a training video

Its like that in the US too. Its not a culture thing, its all over anymore. The difference is how they are handled.
