I know nothing about the AK but seeing it appear here and there on THR has made me really want one. I know everyone loves to talk about theirs so please give me some help. Im looking for a cheap way to get one. What do I need to know when looking around? Please help!:)

Check out gunbroker dot com! Thats where I bought mine.

People don't like Wasr-10's but I think mine is awesome after refinishing the woodwork and putting in a pin retaining plate..

I have about $430 in this one. plus $300 in magazines and ammo.

An AK is still an AK!

These rifles look great! Im more familiar with the AR family of rifles though. Any work need to be done on these or will they work right out of the box?

are you talking about the AK or AR? because the AK will work out of the box just fine (a good clean and a quick funtion check and you're good to go) and the AR is if you build it right or got a complete rifle, then a good clean, a few drops of oil in the bolt and carrier, and you're good to go.

if...... you want a better looking wasr, just take the wood off and refinish it

Mine broke before I fired a round!

Well It seems that the shepards hook ( coat hanger ) that holds the pins in place didn't hit the trigger retaining pin.. So when I tried to chamber a round my trigger assemble spun around in the gun and got stuck..
After I purchased the retaining plate for $10 and installed it in 5 min my WASR was a war beast!
Most are probably fine but I guess there is a reason they sell those aftermarket pin retaining plates!

Here Is a vid of my buddy from work shooting mine last week at our range ( rock pit )
He loves it more than I do.. but that probably because his largest rifle is a .22

Make sure the sights are not canted. Bring a boresighter.

Make sure there is no trigger slap. (To do this, UNLOAD and cycle the gun. Pull the trigger and keep it depressed. Cycle the gun again. The trigger should not move.)

the common klashnikov is a mix of plywood, machined and stamped metal put toghter in such a simple way that any peasant can use it.

its great though the 400$ AKs shoot just as good as the 1000$ AK's.

shop around your area and price them out, then shop the internet, atlantic arms has a wide selection among other dealers and vendors. factor in shipping, and xfer fee to your ffl and see if its cheaper to buy online or purchase locally.

it really depends on your budget, and what cheap is. Henderson Defense has a deal right now for Romanian WASR's that are certifed to have no mag wobble or canted sights for 400 and some change.

sweetbeard, here's another pic

is that a converted 5,45 bakelight in that saiga? ie does it have the black band around the top?

I may be mistaken, but I think that sweetbeard meant "I sure do like you pictures, Sarduy!" but was interpreted as "You sure do like those pics, huh, Sarduy!"

As far as help for the OP, I can say that I've very happy with my Saigas.

i agree the yugo is the way to go, for the money i think they are the best ak value, i like my mak-90 but i love the yugo's, i have shot.

bragood -despite what you hear, don't go cheap. Most of the Century WASR 10 AK's are pretty junky to put it mildly. Some of the guys here do great work with woodworking and can trim up the metal but when you put these guns inches from your head and pull the trigger there is reason to be cautious. These are strictly "tourist trade" guns that would not meet any organizations minimum standard for operational use. For the money they do have that great AK "look" - but not much beyond that. Do I speak from experience? Yes! Some will argue with me here but in their hearts everyone knows I am right.

I am sorry, but that is total bull.gif

The WASRs are made from parts not suitable for military grade guns. This does not make them unsafe for use.

Do you honestly think that Cugir runs an assembly line for non-military-spec parts? No business can run that way and make any money ( Romania exports quite a few weapons to military customers ).

There are some WASRs out there that have had the bad timing to be made with some really awkward looking parts by a hungover Romanian, but I'd venture the vast majority are all military grade parts ( aside from the US-only receiver ).

They are ugly. Ugly doesn't equal bad or unsafe.

Never go cheap! Look for low priced quality :)

My first AKs were Chinese MAK90s - excellent rifles for the money, but I wanted more.
I now have a few pre ban Chinese AKMs. Here are two of them.

The WASR's and SAR's are/were made in Romania. They are not US made receivers, nor are they assembled here, other than the compliance parts.

I have both SAR's and WASR's, and both shoot fine, even my SAR with its slightly canted sights. As was mentioned, regardless of price, they all pretty much shoot the same. The only issues I've had in that respect have been with guns assembled here from parts kits. If your AK wont shoot 3-4" at 100 yards with ammo it likes, then either something is wrong with the gun, or more likely, its the operator.

As far as that shepherds hook goes, for such a simple little piece of metal, you'd think you need a PhD to understand how it works. They do work fine too, by the way, the plates, like the extended mag releases and goofy safety levers are all aftermarket gimmicks.

No, you misunderstand.

The receivers used on the WASRs exist nowhere else in the world but the USA. They are "made specifically for US market" receivers.

The Romanians only make single stack WASR sporters for export. All the mag-well opening and 922r parts installation is done here, by the importer (Century).
