Custom 1911 - Is this a problem?

I just received a Custom 1911 I had built, from the ground up with premium parts specified by me. I haven't fired it yet, the Smith has. Five round at 25 yds. hand held across a sand bag 1 1/2 inches (3 through the same hole). On inspecting the pistol I notice the slide (caspian) over hangs the frame (caspian) maybe 1/2 the thickness of a penny. The rear of the pistol is not "smooth" but is "stepped".
As though the slide is not fully in battery - but it is. Is this a problem? Should I complain. Love the pistol otherwise.

It is a common cosmetic issue that should or could (depending upon how much finish work is in the gun) have been resolved by the smith. I had the same issue with a custom once and the smith blended everything for me free of charge.

With that kind of accuracy, no, I wouldn't complain.

I have also seen new pistols with similar kinds of "tolerances" that either:
a) smoothed out after several hundred rounds ("wore in"), or
b) didn't change, but since they gave acceptable accuracy and function it became a moot point to me.

It is normal. The position of the slide in battery can vary depending on dimensions and locations of parts and holes (slidestop, lower barrel lugs, length of slide, length of rear of frame). Normally this difference is cleaned up by the smith before finishing. Apparently the smith decided to save someone a few bucks.

I guess I would have to ask how much you paid. Maybe you could post a couple pics. If it bothers you ask him about it and see what he says.

For an expensive custom gun, it should be blended to match up. It would bother me to no end, but I'm more anal than most.

If it was built ground up then it should be blended. You probably paid a good amount for it and it deserves attention to detail.

I don't think you have a problem, as this is a common occuerence with
"custom 1911's". Just shoot the heck out of it, and enjoy it while you
can~!

If you paid just for an accuracy job and don't care about how it looks, I don't see the problem.

But if the deal was that he'd fix her from the ground up I'd give his door a knock.

Slide over hang a little is not a problem. Who's your smith I will make sure he is on my black list.

Place the slide in battery and engage the thumb safety. Does it fit evenly into its notch...without a gap at the rear? If it does, either the slide came with extra material at the back, or the frame is out of spec.

If it doesn't...it can be corrected by having him remove just a wee bit of material from the radius in the lower barrel lugs where the slidestop pin rests. It may require a little adjustment at the front as well, so that the barrel will link down correctly. He may want to verify that the disconnect's timing slot location in the slide is correct.

I'm sorry but if I paid BIG $$$ for a custom 1911 you better believe it would be blended to match up !!! That's not being anal, that's expecting to get a custom gun for custom $$$.
